Underwater Hydrophones

Is it technologically feasible to have underwater hydrophones installed at the two ends of the Straits of Singapore or around the perihery of Singapore maritime borders to the south to detect any foreign submarines from entering or leaving Singapore waters? It will act as a sort of underwater radar.However there will be a problem of the large amount of noise generated by the merchant ships. Pls comment.

A whole series of it might be required to triangulate the positions.
Im not sure how well it would work tho. There is quite a lot of surface traffic that can easily mask a submarine in such shallow waters. -

Water around the SE Asian is too shallow and noisy for the hydrophone to work effectively.

Collection of data is only part of the problem, the classification and end product use may be marginal, unlike SOSUS (Sp?) in N Alantic which was the first line of detection of outgoing russian boomers.
We have too many smal craft in the straits; fishing boats which may snag the cables, anchourages where ships may drop and lift anchors damaging lines etc.
Being shallow makes echos a nightmare, plus sound propagation makes for poor analysis. Think is better to have a Infrared surface detection system. -

SOSUS works in the Atlantic Ocean coz it is the Atlantic Ocean! So damm deep with minimum transient noise! -
I am quite sure we have some existing survelliance system for the surface threat. Assuming its not the infrared detection system, will it interfere or makes such a form of detection redundant? Mind explaining how the infrared surface detection system works? Thanks
