We have too many users, fishing boats which may snag the cables, anchourages where ships may drop and life anchors and damage lines etc.
Being shallow makes echos a nightmare plus sound propergation worst enemy of analysis. better to have a Infrared surface detection system.
Ya,I agree,our waters are too shallow so there would be a lot of transient noises which would reduce the effectiveness of sonar.That is why diesel electric subs like to operate in brown waters.
SOSUS works in the Atlantic Ocean coz it is the Atlantic Ocean! So damm deep with minimum transient noise!
