How come Officers use Pistol in war?

Like in Saving Private Ryan and other war movie, The big dudes always use Pistol rather than Rifle and feel very honour to get their pistol.. I mean I would rather have a big gun beside me than a small one

There are so-call SMART Weapons but I doubt there are SMART bullets (... yet) that will differentiate friendlies from the enemies.

Most of the time the deserters will act blur act blur and quitely siam away in the midst of chaos.... except some bloddy idiot deserters who ran away crying and shouting in berserk... then the officer will take out hist pistol and send these bloody fools back to their "home"

If someone wants to desert during wartime , do you think it is as easy as
"Sir , i want to go home...bye bye.."
most likely he will slip away in the midst of chaos without the officer realising...
I believe that when it comes to dire situations and when the whole country is at stake , nobody in his right mind would choose to desert when his own family is at risk.
The only situation when people will desert is when our soldiers are armed with SAR-21 and asked by the officers to face off a column of PT-91 tanks .
Which i believe will never happen. -
Being officer sitting in office for too long , is too weak to carry his own gun properly

hmmm i dun kwon for non fly crew officers like pilots but i know pilot and aircrew uses pistol because their smaller arms in size compare to the rifles. coz flying crew near to carry LPUs survival tools with them so not much space to carry liao.

normally officers in the front line of active combat will carry a rifle as normal. only those officer in the HQ or backline support will carry a pistol instead of rifle because it easier to carry around. though shooting deserters is one possible options but the more likely scenerio, act of self defence in case being assassination or insubordination by enemy of fellow comrades.

currently not all officers carry the P226. it had been taken out from OCS since dunno when. it was supposed to be used for shooting deserters, but now we are supposed to motivate our men, but scare them. i think even OC doesn't have P226 in his TOE

under 25 meters the pistol is still a very accurate weapon lar, given a good amount of training.
Personally, I think ST Kinetics should try coming up with a new lightweight 9mm smg to compete with heckler as well as FN.
Then rear elements such as HQ officers can have these PDWs instead of bulky rifles or under-powered pistols. Buying mp5s (Which is quite bulky anyways, being the largest SMG), or additional P90s just isn't cheap.
Btw is it true that Armor vehicle crews in future would carry p90s over the CAR-15? -
I think a good officer, specialist and or tropper would make each and every single one of his rounds count before being taken out the enemy.
