Will the famous Ion Cannon Satellite in the CNC game be a reality in the near future?

The Soviet Union have attempted to deploy a space-based weapon, Polyus in the past. The weapon is sent into space by the same engine,Energia which sent the Soviet shuttle Buran(Snowstorm), this means that it is huge! It can either be armed with a laser or cannon. But apparently it is a failure as the space tug misfired and Polyus fell into the Pacific Ocean.

In 2 james bond movies, they had a similar cannon but both ran on solar power.

Getting a particle accelerator up into orbit seems too impossible
The ion beam cannot be directed too...may distorted due to magnetic fields in the ionsphere
Unless some genius can come up with a very small design that can flew up there

IIRC the closest thing to a space cannon are the ICBMs (specifically SS-18 Satans) which are earmarked for FOBS (Fractional Orbital Bombardment System). It was designed that the nuke will explode in space, releasing the energy as EMP. The result? Well, most of us have played CnC rite?

The ion cannon maybe feasible in outer space warfare, but it is impossible to use it to destory any target on the ground. Our atmospher is full of particles to absorb the energy, and readily defract the ion light source away from the target.

Wah Ion cannon ar. You just play CNC-General izzit? I heard of Ion Drive/Thrust where the space shuttle keeps on increasing speed using the ion thrust without stopped. Unlimited amt of fuel. How I wish there's Ion Cannon.
