What will happen if there is a war?

From the net, there are a lot of really "innocent" chinese web bloggers claiming that China should whack the hell out of Taiwan by using the newly acquired weaponary.
These views are too simplistic. From paper, we know the Chinese PLA holds a real advantages across the borad compare to Taiwanese. But the China must not risk a pro-long armed conflict neither. From history, we had witnessed many "small countries" repelling attacks from bigger and more powerful countries.
Eg 1.
Russia invaded Finland in 1939. The Russians claimed to take down the Finnish within 3 days. In the end, the conflict dragged from more than 6 mths with no clear victory in sight for Russian.
Eg 2.
Jap invaded China in 1937 and claimed that they could topple the Chinese Gov within a month. In the end, the Jap was caught in a 8years pro-long war with China, depleting her valuable resources.
China must really consider "what to do" with the Taiwanese after they "liberate" Taiwan. For empire builders, it is always important to "conquer the heart of your foe" and make them submit to you wholeheartedly. -
Not to forgot the Chinese incursion into Vietnam on the pretext of "punishing" them. They had to beat a retreat after a quagmire and proclaim a "tactical" victory to save face.
