In terms of micro-UAVs, they have really moved from the realm of dreams to reality. Current vehicle designs include the MicroSTAR from Lockheed Saunders, the Blowfly from UC Berkeley, and even the Sparrow from our own ST Dynamics.

Sub-tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (Sub-Tac UAVÂ’s) provides:
-Cost- effective intelligence.
-Surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
- Situational awareness.
- Force protection and security.
- Remote warfare operations.
The emerging capabilities of Sub-Tac UAV system solution provide a new dimension to airborne multi-mission. The overall advantages of current technology are leveraged to provide a fully operational and affordable system, capable of meeting complex mission objective.
The Sparrow is a retrievable, modestly sized UAV, equipped with an Electro-optical, day/night, stabilized payload. ItÂ’s advanced avionics provide a fully manual to fully autonomous flight, combined with surveillance and recognition capabilities.
A typically configured, fully fueled Sparrow weighs approx. 45 Kg, carries a mission specific payload of 12 Kg. and cruises at 60-70 Kts. for over 4hr. The UAV can be fitted with a larger fuel tank to facilitate extended flight duration.
Ease of Operation
The system is external-pilot-free. Launch is catapult-assisted, automatically placing the UAV at flight altitude/speed. Recovery is also automatic through the use of a parachute.
Flexibility
The 2 separate ground control elements (mini-GCS & LRS) as well as a portable video receiving station allow for increased flexibility when deploying and operating the system.
Minimal Logistics
Modest UAV dimensions, combined with light weight and small operating crew, contribute to shorten deployment time and minimize required auxiliary equipment.
