Malaysia to recieve Su-30MKMs in 2006!

IRKUTSK, December 29 (Itar-Tass) - Russian aircraft-makers will begin supplying Su-30MKM fighters to Malaysia in 2006, officials at the Irkut research and production corporation told Itar-Tass on Thursday.
Although the 900-million-dollar contract to manufacture 18 Su-30MKM aircraft was signed in the summer of 2003, the parties began its implementation in the beginning of this year.
A group of Malaysian Air Force experts has come to the city of Irkutsk to specify the procedures to purchase equipment and materials.
Earlier, Russia supplied several dozen such planes /Su-30MKI/ to India.
The aircraft is a multi-purposes fighter intended for winning air superiority and destroying ground and seaborne targets. It can fly missions at a considerable distance from the base, in all weather conditions, day and night, and amidst electronic warfare.
Aside from the manufacture of 18 Su-30MKM, the contract envisions their servicing in Malaysia, with subsequent modernization, if necessary.
To this end, Irkut, the head company, will open a service center in Malaysia.

Every country will have some top guns and this is really a good plane. No doubt maintenance is a issue but the plane can pack a package.
If I am remember correctly, it can be used for anti ship role.... -
Will our Vipers be able to successfully tango with them if the need arises? Also, would it be a better ideal to invest in aircrafts to ocunter the threat or would it be wiser to invest in SAMs?

The Su-30 is both a threat at BVR and WVR. I doubt our vipers would want to get in close to tango with them unless the situation is very unique indeed.
The main disadvantage is the Su-30's size and RCS. Similarly said for our F-15SG. Their main advantage is their powerful jammers, heavy weapons load, powerful radar, and long range.
Unless we acquired weapons like the AMRAAM C, which carries a HOJ capability, it is very hard to deal with the Su-30 type aircraft in BVR. -

he probably means the AMRAAM D version... which packs a range comparable to the phoenix AIM-54C,
when linked to our E2C APS-138(hoped they upgrade to APS-145), the AMRAAM D will probably make any aerial fight a walkover even for our F-5S, irreguardless if enemy uses the SU-30MKM, MKI or MK.
remember how RAAF got thrashed by RMAF MIG-29 because of AMRAAMSKI? and how the RMAF MIG-29 in return got stomped on by AV-8B harrier with AMRAAM?
in all the above exercise... the winner was an older and less capable plane... but when loaded with the right missile... even old dogs can bite through titanium door.
missiles are playing a bigger part nowadays... maybe we should grab a few SIA AIRBUS A-380 and turn it into one big giant flying fireship carrying hundreds of ammraam...

Hmm I think the RSAF did order amraam Cs back in 2000. They were probably the C-5 or C-6 series which included the HOJ capabilities. But, i think they still lack the range of the C-7. The D is supposedly even longer reaching than the C-7.... no one knows how long actually. Most important of all would be the 2-way data link on the D... muahaha.
