Field Engineer -- Pioneer
You are a combat engineer in the infantry. You will support infantry units where they require field engineering. This includes demolition of obstacles, bridging, construction of obstacles and fortifications, mining, demining and other tasks.
This is probably the toughest job in the Army, even tougher than being a Commando in some ways. You will be the first man in a assault, carrying bangalore torpedoes or breaching charges to clear a gap for the rest of the unit to assault through. You will move on foot through the jungle with the infantry, but carry much more weight in mines, tools and explosives than the infantrymen you are supporting. You will help build infantry bridges, consisting of 80+ kg sections moved into place by hand. You will clear minefields.
You poor bugger, I salute you.
Everybody who knows anything about the Army will respect you later, but you will really earn this respect in sweat and blood. Watch out for your toes -- the most common injury to combat engineers is dropping extremely heavy things on their feet. Also watch out for your back -- you will carry a lot of weight. Make friends with your unit, and get them to help you or you will surely die on exercise with the amount of things you must do. -

BTW Pioneer is not sama as Cbt Engr which have many viration (bridge, Hv Plant, Boat, EOD etc etc). Inf Pnr is worst of both worlds, carry equipment for all engr work but no/little transport. Do all coolie kang and still infantry when necessary.
If you think NSF tough, wait till NSMan, lagi siong.
Minefield - up to 400m mixed minefield, don't play play, mine dump was 100m from ILM. Must have walked 10km to lay that minefield.
Triple con meaured in 100m lengths, minimum 300m, maximum? -no max dah. Our unit effort 600m!!
BCP lagi best - 24 men platoon, 4,000 sandbags, 56 x 2.4m picket (yes 2.4m not your 1.7 baby picket) enuff zinc sheets to build 4 room flat, "Oh please be operational by 08:00 for btn cmdr". Then after that have to dig own 2 man trench surround BCP position for local defence force!
Worst ex was 2 hours sleep in 48 hours, pull out - do beach assault as enemy simulator then ex cut; spend another 8 hours to recover equipment (12x 3ton loads plus 2 trailers), 4 hours washing sandbags etc., count, tie in budles of 20. Return 75 triple con wire, all with 24 men & commanders.
Enjoy NSF till operational under NSMan then U wish you still NSF. -
Isn't 30 SCE also classied as "field engineers".

think combat engineers is different from pioneers..
from you posting code, you should be to 3RD GDS to become their support company, pioneer platoon.
Maybe you can excel, then later they ask you go sispec then become pioneer spec.
Yesh, no matter what kind of engineers, combat or pioneers they super siong.
But think, let's say after mines are setup then you wait lor...hopefully no enemies come.

all da best to u man. 3 SIR is supposedly converted for urban operations. Perhaps u may actually have something newer for pioneer work in the urban environment. U never know.. =D

One friend of mine ended up as a pioneer. There are many kinds of Combat Engineers. They do a variety of things like building bridges, building defences etc.
But I think one of the things pioneers specialise in is clearing minefields. They carry short little golf clubs used for probing for mines, while they on all fours crawling.
When they say you gotta learn how to crawl before you learn how to walk, I think they were talking about to the Pioneers.
Tough times ahead. Look on the bright side, one day you will look back and feel proud oif what you have gone through. -
there are many types of engr but you are not the amphibious engr nor armor engr and you will not be diposing bombs. being attached to the infantry you will not likely be building bridges or road repairs.
your main tasks will be mine warfare, fortification and demolition. All very xiong. thousands of sand bags and pickets, building concertina fence in the water in beach fortification, all night trainings. carry a lot of store there and carry them back, wash and return stores, damn sian. Built oredi then have to dismantle, boh liao. Only interesting on is demolition, bring stores there, "exploded" and come back with less stores.
but you see things done, there is a sense of achievement.

Hmm... reported there on monday and was told by my unit tt i am going to be a recee trooper instead of a pioneer (yet another army cock-up? ). I now oso dunnoe wad else to say.....pioneer and scout both oso shiong so din protest to them
Anyway i guess being an infantry recee trooper is better in terms of prestige, status, etc. -

Actually, recce is quite nice in peacetime training. You get to carry less weight, use the cool carbine and get far away from your superiors during exercises. Once you leave the sight of your unit while doing a recce, you can basically do whatever you want as long as you complete your mission. Of course, in a war, recce is extremely dangerous and quite an eilte vocation. Since you are batallion recce, I don't think you will get to use motorcycles like brigade recce. Strictly foot recce, creeping about for long long distances. You can easily walk over 100 km in an exercise, but just relax and enjoy the stroll.

sounds like you got away with being a cheap labour to become a runner.
enjoy yourself in whatever you do. just make sure you don't kena duty on christmas, new year and chinese new year. -
YOu have just gone from the worst combat job in the army to one of the best combat job.
Recce is great. Get to spend a lot of time in small group doing patrol, OP etc. Yes, and damn prestigious. And these days the radio sets are very light so no problem there.
You're a lucky guy. -
Just make sure you don't drown during the POW training....

Scouts is good, when out on mission, no govt. bring can food, 1.25 soft drinks, heheheh...
got motorcycle even better. else also very fun...and dun get yourself lost!
