how can you count salary like that? I would count NS as a loss of income before I retire.
If I'm earning 6k a month before I retire I would have lost 148k... whoa, MINDEF should free me HDB flat leh.

Anyhow, for defaulting on NSF, a harsher penalty would have been more deserving.
The law needs to be amended to stay ahead of the times. Fining him a paltry 5K is not sending the right message, especially to those who can't afford to study or work overseas. -

There are two sets of jugdement.
One for the Elites. (Scholar, Sportsman, Artist, Businessman, Millionaire, Lawyer)
One for Commoner. (Hawker, Senior Citizen, Blue Collar Worker)
Just take a look at the recent case about the soccer players on the underage gal.
You have to be a ELITE to beat the law.
So, be super smart and super rich if you want to keep your ass out of jail. -

Question, so this guy has become a British citizen. Did he denounce Singapore citizenship? I thought Singapore permits only one citizenship. If that's the case, then he is not a Singapore citizen anymore. So the courts still able to take any action?

When he committed the offence he was a Singapore citizen. If someone murder a man here and then becomes a foreign citizen for the next 30 years, he can still be charged if he returns to Singapore..
Now you have to post a bond if you want to take your son overseas for studies. The stupid thing about the fine is that it is less then what you will lose if you forfeit your bond and not return to Singapore. -
Then you better make sure your son becomes famous and rich while overseas. As many have pointed out, different standards apply to different classes of people here. Born in Singapore and resident in the UK since 1978, when he was 12.
Got UK citizenship when he was 24,according to calculations of ST info.
So , if he renounced Sg citizenship arond 1978 and around aged 24
,he was long over due for NS liability. -
To think that those ppl from JW had to go detention for 3 yrs to skip NS. This is a better alternative.

He should be deported as a convicted criminal and the Public Prosecutor is negligent in not seeking an appeal at a higher court to press for more severe punishment...
