He,now is 49 years old, left Sg when he was 12 .Became British citizen in 1978.
Recently appeared in Sg court and fined only.
Read today 20.11.2005 STimes front page.
Some said he did good for Sg .The fine is just fine.
But how people will remember him, a Singaporean or British?How he introudced himself,the former or latter?

if they make NS such a good thing i don't think anyone will want to default on NS.
basically , it's because national service sucks.
thats why people default instead of rushing to serve their national service. -
Let's say NS = Singapore island country club membership , with luxury spa and relaxing pools and chiobus to watch in.
You are enlisted at the age of 18 to go NS.
Does a $5,000 fine make any sense or does detention barracks makes any sense?
i certainly don't think so.
A $5,000 fine or DB for not going to SICC would not even be possible in the first place. -

we cant ask him to do NS at his age... but i am sure a 3 year jail would be more appropriate.

the above law is long overdue for an update... it was created at a time when chao guo tiao is going at 10cents a plate...
going by the current price of the chao guo tiao $2... his correct fine after correction for inflation should be 20*5000 = $200,000..
if we consider the chao guo tiao at famous local hotel at $25 per plate... his fine should be $1,250,000 dollar. -

he actually avoided 2 1/2 years NS and 9 cycles of reservists with $5k. not to mention the danger of military training. -
