True, respect should be earned but being a uniformed organisation with proper code of conduct laid out, it is necessary to salute commisioned officers even though you do not mean it. This is part of the discipline expected of every soldier. It is under the GOM and part of military protocol. It is a chargeable offence but you should be glad most officers dun really go for this 5 cent stuff.
