Who is talking about OTH blah blah........the sub-launched missile capability is to allow stand-off range capability lah.

The missile has a range of 50 km, which enables the submarine to go into action while remaining out of range of the detection equipment and, even more importantly, the weapons of its surface enemies. ( right.... i am sure all the makers of AMM and CIWS must be laughing their tooth off)
When launched the EXOCET SM39 Block 2 imposes few constraints on the submarine depth, course and speed ( how about distance to target? )

assuming a sub at sea level... and a US NIMITZ carrier(the biggest military ship i can find ) with a height of 40 meter... the radar horizon is a mere 26km...
versus closer to home... against the RSN formidable... the radar horizon is a pitiful 15KM (assuming the formidable height is 15meter), in reality... the detection range if far lower... since most of the ships RCS is near the water then at the top where sufficient radar echos can be detected.
comparatively... the latest Gould Mk 48 Mod 4 heavyweight torpedoes has a range of 50KM at 40knots (islamic states.. need not apply ).... stupid lizard still think about Stand off range of exocet missiles...
so... unless the world is flat to the lizard brain... whats the point of noteing the exocet range of 50KM??

Usually, the sub would make a radar sweep to provide targetting data for missiles. For the harpoon, it is possible to fire it passively entirely, not sure abt exocet. Once the harpoon is launched on bearing, it will pop up to the surface, climb, acquire target and dive at it. Hence the range.
However, the missile launched like that, would acquire the nearest target. And it might include civ vessels in the vincinity.
U are rite abt the OTH range tho. -

but i do agreed... talking military to civilians can be a challenging task... especially when some of those civilians thinks the world is flat and missile have 100 hit probability at max range...
its difficult to teach a cow to appreciate music... they should have leave those cows to their grass and dirt... a cow dont need to know the world is round. -
That's a very long torpedo. I was walking past a maritime museum recently and saw the replica of a normal torpedo too, its frickin huge if you ask me.

two... most missiles dont carry IFF... you might just end up with fracticide...
three... missiles are stupid.. they will hit the first thing they see... be it a CVN, merchant ship or a whale.
four... subs that breaks water surface would be prime target for MPAs like RSAF fokker maritime enforcers that comes with APS-114 and 4 torps. -

We should take some effort to quote correctly or others would doubt the validity of posts made here. -
That's the problem with sub-launched missiles. How are you going to target them? The sub cannot "see" that far while it is submerged, and if it wants to get targetting data from other ships or satellites, it must come close to the surface and put up a UHF or VHF antenna, which reveals its position. While submerged it can only use LF radio, which has bandwidth of about 10 bits per minute. After the sub launches the missile, its position is revealed to everyone within radar range, not just ships within sonar range for the case of a torpedo, which is suicide. No matter how you cut it, sub-launched ASMs are suicide for the sub. Land attack cruise missiles and ballistic missiles are OK, since their targets don't move, but missiles meant to engage moving targets -- no way.

Prior to the wars in middle east , Israel has been training up , having aerial training over Tel Aviv , and mock dogfights etc..
Where-else , the other few parties , got their aircraft (touted to be similar in terms of performance to the israel aircrafts) and almost started using them immediately. Even the soviet pilots didn't teach them anything much..
this shows how important the crew is... -
We got over 20-30 PVs some armed with Harpoon , 4 LST and 6 stealth frigates with ASW helicopters and 6 submarines and 10 Fokker-50 armed with Harpoon missiles and you want to go there talk cock with them for what?
We got so many aircraft that we even put them in storage! -

Problem with the shkval is that its has minimum guidance. But at its speed, it has a very large no escape envelope if within range.

What he said about fire and forget is correct.
The MM38 don't need a surface or airborne station to relay station to the missile. The MM38 can go automatic and he for the target as directed by coordinates from the launcher. Once within a certain range, the MM38 seeker will go active and home on the target. However, accuracy is no good cause the target will be moving also.
