The JPG-1 AESA, especially, is a disappointment with faults that are still not corrected. The radar negating effect was never really solved, as was the faulty range due to software troubles. Currently, F-2's air-to-air tracking range against fighter-sized targets are rumored to be as low as 40km.

The japanese has no fear for their national sovereinty come from any invading enemies, but the fear of being wiped off the surface of earth from the eruption of the 4 volcanos and earthquakes. That has not changed since 100 yrs ago, but is it changing?Originally posted by laurence82:This is quite a stupid thing to say
How can compare Japan 60 years ago and now?
Besides, Japan might have a great self defence force
but its hampered by the sheer geography of its land
Another point is, Japan inability to build a great projection force has been highlighted quite often in the papers..
so, according to your logic, a murderer's children will have to pay for the crimes of their father ?Originally posted by dotaro:People harp about the past cos Japan wun admit fully to their past....

This is an old argument but many are still pretty muddled up on some fundamentals.Originally posted by Fatum:so, according to your logic, a murderer's children will have to pay for the crimes of their father ?
it's been 60 years .... the only reason the politicians of some countries are still harping about it now is because it's a fantastic domestic political tool, be it south korea or china etc ... China's anti japanese rhetoric were ramped up a few notches because of rising political discontent at home, and it's increasing competition with japan for resources around the world (go read about oil and gas drilling in the north china sea )
recall back to the SARS period, what's the name of the main hospital in Beijing designated as the main SARS hospital ? ... remember the Sino-Japanese Friendship hospital ? ... built with japanese money ? .... double standards ? ... what of the billions in developmental aid Japan pumped into China in the past two decades ? .... what of the warm and fuzzy relationship that existed between both goverments and both countries' public before ? ...
The chinese public, and some chinese friends agree with me on this, in this case is being used as a political pawn in a greater power play, ditto the japanese, though i still sense strong pro chinese sentiments among the japanese students here, you'd be surprised at how many are learning mandarin, instead of say French or Spanish.
I'm not saying that we should forget history's lessons, but we should see things from a balanced perspective, from a present day context, not swallow any drivel and rhetoric that's the prevailing fashion right now ... we should not believe everything we read in the textbook eh ...
good points bro ....Originally posted by sgdiehard:This is an old argument but many are still pretty muddled up on some fundamentals.
1) A murder's son does not have to pay for his father's crime; but if he worship his father for the crime he committed, it is a different message to the victims.
2) There is no denial that there are some domestic politics involved, but that is not "the only reason" for the tension between china/korea and japan!! Between neighboring countries there will always be territorial disputes, competition for resources,...etc., they don't need the WW2 history to start them or complicate them. The facts remain that Japan need to learn from the German, admit its atrocities in WW2 and put this behind.
3) China and Korea did not sell their national pride for money! " the warm and fuzzy relationship that existed between both goverments and both countries' public" did not come as a compromise to the historical facts, does it? You can' t buy everything with money.
4) Many Japanese outside of Japan know the truths, but not those in Japan. And you should tell your japanese friends not to believe in their history textbooks for they contain distorted facts of history.
Agree, "we should not forget history's lessons, and we should see things from a balanced perspective", but first, you should know the history, or how do you forget?? What is a present day context? a new intepretation or lessons learnt?

The geography of its land will never hampered the JDF for they never fought a battle on its land.
Japan's ability to build its armed forces is limited by the constitutions, not by its technological or financial capabilities.
Technologies will take yrs to built and financial capabilities take time to accumulate, but constitutions can be changed within a short period of time. Japan already has the technologies and money to build a projection force, what is necessary is a change of constitutions. They already changed the name of JDF to Japan Defence Army, Japan Defence Air Force and Japan Defence Navy. Whats next?

Logically, the Japanese should be wiped off the surface of the earth (by the Chinese, of course) for what they did.
You are right! invasion has to come by sea or air, and who in the world now has the capability to lauch sea and air on Japan?? probably not even america.Originally posted by laurence82:Nope, not at least what i read on globalsecurity
The stretch of islands means they are more hampered in deploying their airfoce and navy to fight off the first wave of invasion ,which has to come by sea or air. When enemies landed, land troops need naval or air transport to deploy them across islands. One of the strategies is to wait and hold till reinforcements from the US arrives.
why should JAF worry about the geography of japan or about the deployability when they only fight wars of invasion?Originally posted by laurence82:And i dont understand one thing, whats the link between them not having fought a war before on its land and the geography cannot possibly hampers the deployability of their armed forces?
Originally posted by tvdog:What an ingenious commentary !
Invading an island nation like Japan will not be easy. It would be more like D-Day or better yet, reference the battle of Okinawa. One figure quoted 500,000 casualty if the mainland of Japan was invaded. This was WW2 and a very weak Japan in 1945.
So if someone were to mount an attack on Japan today, with today's modern weaponry involved, the casualty figure would number above a million surely.Even tried imagine oil embargo, SLOC blockage ?

well, wars in the past are not fought for territorial possessions alone u noeOriginally posted by sgdiehard:why should JAF worry about the geography of japan or about the deployability when they only fight wars of invasion?
