All I know is that Mal=Malaysia, indo=Indonesia
1980s or 1990s... one of the year... the operation was carried out.
In Indonesia's army newspaper at that time, there's something like... "to retrieve the solevienety(dunno how to spell) of this land... combine forces to destroy the intruder... between indonesia and malaysia..."
That exercise consist of air, land and sea... combine forces of indonesia and malaysia... from north to final destination at johor...
operation code name: pukul habis = beat to death....
Conducted at 8 aug... 1 day before national day...
It affects singapore quite a lot and the public know it...
Singapore felt threaten and massive recall back ORDs and launched Ex. Trojan
Public was Angry...
But they claimed that singapore was over-reacting... -

He quickly rushed back to his base after what happened..he told me that the situation was pretty tense , he was also promoted after what happened...Even though it's many years ago , he still refuses to disclose what kind of details of what happened. -

SINGAPORE SHOWS CONCERN OVER MALAYSIA-INDONESIA MILITARY EXERCISE
Singapore has shown concerns over the on-going
Malaysia-Indonesia joint military exercise held in Malaysia.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary of National Development Lee
Yiok Seng said today at a National Day celebration dinner that
Singaporeans should be reminded to be vigilant and never take
national security for granted.
Indonesia and Malaysia are conducting a large scale joint
military exercise codenamed Malindo Darsasa from July
29 to August 11 at Kota Tinggi in Johor state of Malaysia, about 20
kilometers from Singapore.
Indonesia and Malaysia also held a joint air exercise
yesterday, as part of the Malindo Darsasa exercise. 128
Malaysian and 185 Indonesian paratroopers and six air force
transport aircraft, four from Indonesia and two from Malaysia,
took part in yesterday's operation.

If you take a look at singapore's purchases , singapore's military buildup..from 1990's to 2005' i would say its the most largest among anyone in SEA..
Even from 1965 to 1980' the buildup wasn't that big. -

This topic has been discussed before - the exercise happen during our national day, and was a strong political message and test.
It was a period of change in Singapore - most significant is the political leadership change (the change of prime minister). Besides the exercise, there was also the SQ hijack in 1991, and the changes to our army division structure in 1990. If it was a test - I think we did well enough. -

Heard from my sec.sch Physics teacher that we also also conducted air-drop of our CDOs...hmmm......but boy,its definitely mean to mess with a nation on the eve of its national day.

As for armour side, i heard from my instructors from SOA during my TCC that those SARs on standby are all issued with life-rounds and deployed along the northern coast opposite Malaysia. As far as i know Singapore have never come so close to war before. Situation then is indeed tense, if the foreign troops on exercise in Johore come any nearer we would have attacked. This is meant to show our friendly neighbours not to mess around with us.

i think it happened more than once .... i remember attending a meet the PM session back in 98 or so when i was back in poly, he mentioned something about troop movements in johor too ... the CIQ issues and other stuff were pretty hot potatoes back then i think ....
they probably do this periodlcally to rattle our cages ... -
from the best of my knowledge both 2 countries had massive amount of troops in johore. within visual range from some parts of singapore. the amount of troops both countries put together for this Malindo is scary. that's why MINDEF activated operational units upon knowledge of this.
it's not over reactive.
typical singaporean. nothing happens. KPKB say over reactive lar. waste manpower lar.
something happens, KPKB why never do enough preparations etc etc.

Anybody here did their NS during that period?
Quite frankly I cannot remember much - only being on alert, no loading of live rounds what so ever.
The closest for me was during the hijack - was on standby that particular week - the usual turnout and ready to deploy. -
perhaps they were inspired by mr.saddam
