  ARLINGTON, Virginia -- For years, the U.S. military has explored a new kind of firepower that is instantaneous, precise and almost inexhaustible: beams of electromagnetic energy. "Directed-energy" pulses can be throttled up or down depending on the situation, much like the phasers on Star Trek could be set to kill or merely stun.
  
  Such weapons are now nearing fruition. But logistical issues have delayed their battlefield debut -- even as soldiers in Iraq encounter tense urban situations in which the nonlethal capabilities of directed energy could be put to the test.

  Electron based weapons can only be fired in a vacuum but will change into a beam of charged ions will re-entering the atmosphere
  
  Since the mass availability of man-made diamonds...the problems of high temperature optics to withstand the high temperature of ultraviolet wavelength energy beams have been resolved...
  
  That energy beam can burn through a lot of things instantly
  
  And the shoulder fired plasma cannon like the "predator" is using is almost possible

  Yeah with man-made diamonds becoming cheaper and cheaper.. laser weapons are no longer an issue of how but how much and how quickly we can build them
