JIUQUAN, China (AP) -- Two years after China became only the third nation to launch a human into orbit, a pair of astronauts blasted off Wednesday on a longer, riskier mission after receiving a farewell visit from Premier Wen Jiabao.
The spacecraft carrying 2 spacemen was launched 9am today -

US concern about China's space capabilities are first that China might eventually develop the ability to attack US satellites, because the US military is heavily dependent on them

Mistake, it was US that (almost) sent an Indian astronaut up to space.

But you have to hand it to them - they do aim very high and who knows, they may even succeed sooner than expected.
Not so much that they are not sophisticated enough, but financially, a space program is very, very expensive. Only countries who want to "show off" go the whole hog and send people up. -

My edited post explains why I think it'll take a long time before they send people up to space. The French and Indians have been building rockets and sending satellites up to space for a long time. So I'm sure India will be the next Asian country to send someone up. That China beat them to it must've pissed them off badly. And France will be the first Western European.
China's feat of sending people up was already achieved by US and USSR in the late sixties - 40 years ago. So the technology is nothing new. Just blooming expensive to get all the gear, training, trials etc into place. -

Malaysia has already started its astronaut selection. The Russians promised to send one Malaysian up to the ISS when they bought 18 Su-30s
