Anyway, our carrier firing solution is not the first time.It has happened to the USN in Virginia, and the Sub was a newer class. -
Does any subs in this day and age have any counter-measures or weapons for air-borne threats?Like the S3 Viking anti-sub aircraft etc.? in WWII the Nazi U-boats often feature a gun on its deck specifically for anti-aircraft use.

The Skorean chose the AIP U214 over the Scorpene becos of pricing!!!!South Korea selected the German company's Type 214 submarine over the French Scorpene submarine because the Germans offered a better price and parts supply.

In fact, so far most contract, the Scorpene is generally more expensive than the U214!!!!
India recently ordered 6 non AIP Scorpene SSKs which to be built in India cost them USD1.8bn, USD300mil for non AIP SSK.
So how much is a AIP SSK Scorpene???

Therefore, unless a brand new AIP SSK has a lifespan of 6 times that of the Vastergotland, no way the Vastergotland AIP SSK USD64mils are not worth it!!!! -

Ask RSN to buy U214 sub(Brand new),I'm not insisted on buying scopene but strongly against buying those 2nd hand swedish sub.No way I'm trusting those 2nd hand swedish sub with our past experience of using Sjoormen even the price offer is super reasonable. So do you have the cost of maintenance for a brand new Scorpene as compare to Vastetgotland???
The fact that the Swede upgraded their 2 Vastetgotland at a cost of USD75mils instead of building 2 new boats certainly think they are worth it!!!!
Another thing , all subs even the US SSN, only on patrol 1/3 of the time, 1/3 on standby and 1/3 at the yard!!!! -
Sub spend alot of time in the yard especially in this region. Because their hull needs more care. Alot more care then a surface ship.
Besides someone has to scrub the damn hull of growth -
Does the russkie subs have to surface to fire off their SAMs? Seems that russkie subs are always more armed then the Europeans and Americans

Yeap, they'd have to surface somewhat. Not the whole boat, but enuff to get the section of the boat above water. The highest point usually... dunno wad its called. Then they'd have to turn on their radar to acquire the aircraft, instantly announcing its presence to everyone.

The yanks called it the sail n the brits call it the fin. Anyway u need not to surface....just need to go to persicope depth n raise the radar will do if they use active seeking SAM or can use passive seeking SAM using visual sighting such as periscope or using sonar solution...

U can use a sonar solution on an airborne target??? I never knew that.... Besides I'd figure that most subs would avoid aircraft if practically possible. Those sub hunter aircraft tend to have pretty good surface scanning radars to detect periscope feathers n such.

Hmmm, but wouldn't trying to "surface" near an ASW helo be kinda risking it a bit too much?
Perhaps a passive (eg heatseeking) SAM system, that can be delivered to the surface similar to the UGM-84's capsule might be more useful.
Pop a noisemaker here, sneak a lil over there... ASW helo investigates, pops "U-AM" at helo's bearing, and u'd splash a Helo without any radar emissions.
