Bomb shelter in Singapore

History
1.Since 1987,all public housing (HDB flats) have been built with civil defense shelter at basement.Later ,they are built at ground floor level.
2.Since 1997,all public and private reseidential flat or house are required to build
a shelter in each flat or house around few sq meters.It is built with reinforced concrete cement and metal door.
3.There is plan to build common shelter in each floor.
4.CD shelters are also built in schools,community centers,some MRT stations.

the plan is to build every unit with a bomb shelter which can house an average of 4 per unit.

Lol those bomb shelters ar? hah not a place you'd wanna be for more then a few hours. Trust me, the air get's musty and stale while the smell......woot. Also the water supply in there aint really worth much.
As for the metal stick, i guess they just wanted a hardcore around which the building can survive? -

Buildings are surprisingly sturdy. Even if you get a direct hit from 1 bomb, the building is not going to collapse, just big holes, missing floors and facades, blown out windows and bits and pieces everywhere. So the scenario of a stack of bomb shelter remains is highly remote. The shelters will give some protection against shrapnel, unless you get a direct hit right at your unit.

The whole idea is that in the event of a bomb strike, that portion of the apartment is the only thing that remains standing.
Ironically, most residents use it as a storeroom. Imagining a bombed out estate and visualising the same building as the only thing left, i wonder how the air ventilation is going to help the 1st - 4th floors in the event of rubble blockage?
Incidently, i believe this idea was adopted from Israel. -

HDB blocks are not military targets mah, they won't aim several bombs at a particular block. So either the bombed HDB block is collateral damage from a stray bomb or the enemy randomly mass bombs an estate to achieve civilian demoralisation.

Bomb shelter? Who needs them when you have this?

Bomb shelters are built not to protect u from direct hit of bomb.
It will protect u from flying sharpnels which can hit many meters away.
2.It will provide psychological effect to soldiers that their family got
protections in case there is any air strike.
3.It cost few thousand Sg dollars to build per a HDB flat.Life span around at least 30 years.
4.Though wife of PM,Mdm HO CHING critize the effectiveness of Civil Defense House Hold Shelter,it will be built.
5.There are some beneath basket pitch of schools and CC,which is uesd as shooting range and othere purposes.Have u seen the blast doors in Surgery Theaters in TTS and Changi Hospitals?
6.No other country give u such protections----the surgery will
continue despite air raid outside.Dunt xyz##$$$$ when
u pay IRSD next year.
This is a premium of a insurance.u dunt know when u need this. -
Update - it is no longer a require that household shelters to be included in new developments not yet approved for construction. this change in policy is in line with Govt change of policy, don;t ask me why..

for hdb, i doubt they even want to bomb or just bomb a few with cheap ones to scare us. -
if hdbs crumbled...wld ppl be able to get out of the bomb shelters in time with tonnes of building debris on top ?

From engineering point of view, the reinforced so-called "bomb shelter" will act as the main support beam of the buildings, using the Law of second moment of inertia (pls correct me if I am wrong, a bit rusty liao after so many donkey years never do mechanics).
In this way, we need not to use a full solid beam for supporting our ever growing taller HDB flats. A hollow beam structure (that is similar to our bomb shelter) can be used as a loading bearing component and act as a storage rm in peace time or a temp bomb shelter in not-so-peaceful time.
