fr 30.09.2005 www.murdoconline.netThe F-14 Tomcat made its final public appearance as an active part of the Navy over the September 17th weekend in an air show at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.
The Tomcat will be retired after the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT returns from her current deployment to the Persian Gulf area next spring. The last two Tomcat squadrons, VF-31 "Tomcatters" and VF-213 "Black Lions", are aboard the 'Big Stick' and will transition to the F/A-18 Super Hornet when they return. -
Boy I'm real sad that the once almighty fighter, the F14 Tomcat, shot to fame by movies like Top Gun has to bow out of the arena. Such a pity...

I personally love the F-14 design very much. I think the design of the Macross machine is being adapted from the F-14. There are claims that the F-18 are unable to replace the F-14 in its long range and its ability to carry more weapons. This can be seen with the difference in size between the F-14 and the F-18. The Russians are fielding the naval derivative of Su-27 which is about the same size as the F-14. This have spark some concerns in the US navy.

The iranians use their tomcats more for awacs roles rather than interceptor. I think they've had quite a bit of modifications done by the russians as well.
Saw a video tribute of a navy squadrons transition from Tomcat to Superbug. they chose a very sad song for that transition. haha. -

They bought a few of those to try out. In fact, an ex-navy admiral mentioned in an article, that the USN Navy should replace the F-14s with Navalized, american modified Su-27s, rather than F/A-18Es for the navy's fleet interceptor role until the JSF arrives.
I figured it makes a bit of sense, in that, whatever u can stuff into a superbug, u can stuff into a flanker. U can refurb the avionics suite, engines as well, and u actually have a more capable aircraft with superior thrust to weight ratio compared to the superbug. Of course, there goes the PGM capability. -
The Superbug can't carry phoneix missiles, so no more super long range "shoot and scoots".
But the Superbig is supposed to be more manouverable.
However the F14 is still just so much more prettier an aircraft. Remember VX-9's tomcat? Not to mention the birds with the Jolly Rogers, Grim Reapers, Wolfpack, Black Knights amongst others. -
Nope. Not from what I heard. The superbug is not even as manueverable as the plane ol hornet. Hence, it wont match the F-14 in a dogfight. inferior thrust to weight ratio.
But, with its new AESA radar, and more effective jammers, it will give the F-14 a run for its money.
Besides, phoenixs were meant for bomber sized targets, un maneuverable stuff, not effective against most modern fighters. But, id say its still more effective than an SA-2 =) -
Really? Then wats the point of replacing them then. It's kinda like replacing a Lamboghini Diablo with a Toyota Corolla, silly isn't it?
Ya, but if say 6 F14s fire 4 phoneix missiles each, that is 24 missiles flying at you, even if it was designed for bombers, if your RWR picked them up, you'd take some fairly drastic evasive action. Just enough distraction to prevent you from firing your medium range missiles and enough time for a second wave of AMRAAMs to sneak up on you.

Erm, i am not aware of any training doctrines that spams 6 missiles at one target. First of all, each phoenix is half a mil. Firing 24 phoenix at me, is throwing away 12 million dollars at a $20 million dollar jet. With Assuming its a 6 v 6, I lose 1 aircraft, but the rest of ur Tomcats are now defenseless. Seriously speaking, only 2 missiles will be launched at 1 target, at best, JUST to be sure. Assuming the F-14s launch at max range, which is approximately 100 miles, at 3000mph, it gives me a whole 2 minutes to put the missile on my beam, or to hit my AB and run THE OPPOSITE direction away from the missile.
2 minutes is a LOT of time to prepare to dodge missiles. -

Yup. Look, when I said "you" it was figurative. Of course no one shoots 24 missiles at one target. Duh!
The F14s used to carry 4 AIM54s, 2 Amraams and 2 'winders, not to mention the 20mm cannon. So, no, if they fired all their phoneix missiles, they wouldn't be unarmed.
And even with 2 missiles headed in your direction, you'd still take drastic evasive action. Enough time for the F14 to fired a well aimed Amraam as a follow-up. -

abt time to retire...too bad the navy does not make the stealth ver of F-14....NATF program....
