Korea to Develop Unmanned Stealth Plane
Korea is looking to develop a stealth fighter plane that can be piloted by remote control by the 2020s. The U.S. and other developed countries are already developing so-called unmanned combat air vehicles or UCAV, but none are in use.
According to information submitted Thursday to lawmaker Song Young-sun by the Defense Ministry's Agency for Defense Development (ADD), Korea is developing stealth technology it would apply to its next-generation fighter jet and the stealth fighter project.
The ADD has already invested a total of W6 billion (US$6 million) in developing radar-wave absorbing paints and paneling. It also plans to incorporate stealth technology into Korea's next-generation destroyers, missile boats and aircraft.
If Korea succeeds in developing a stealth UCAV by the 2020s, it could join the U.S., France, Russia and a handful of other countries as a leader in military technology. The United States is currently developing unmanned stealth fighters for use by the Navy and Air Force.
