Compare SAF to ROK

After looking all these pics from these website, i find SAF military training is nothing compare to the ROK(South Korean army). Somemore, our training is getting even more relax each year. Wonder will it affect the quality of our soldiers?Even though ROK is a conscripted army which is same as the SAF, but they still maintain a very highly trained and tough army. At least, the korean soldiers look more garang and professional than our soldiers.
South Koreans field an INCREDIBLE infantry. This reputation evolved particulary when the US used KATUSA; Korean soliders detached to Regular Army units in S. Korea. Although the Koreans solider earned a fraction of their US counterparts, they were indefatigable--they could run all day, highly disciplined, and sharp as tacks. This reputation applied to their Ranger School. US personnel did attend this course, but the graduation rate was always extremely low, and eventually the Korean Ranger course was closed to US personnel on the grounds of the low grad rate.

Partly because the threat of war with NK or possibly China or Japan is very very very real. That region is HOT. Even now it seems all peace and quiet but it can turn into a ugly brawl in one night involving all nations in east asia. I mean look at the DMZ...
Look at the amount of conflicts in that region. The most prominant one being NK seeking to be a nuclear power. With this kind of neighbour, training need to be siong as HELL to give the soldiers confidence. Come to think about it, if there is ever a WWIII, the first battle may not be in Europe but in East Asia and thus escalating to rest of the world.
Singapore on the other is blessed (im not sure about this) to be in a rather stable region where there is no KIMJONGII kind of leader, there are less tensions between neighbours. -
Wat u sae is true. But what if there is a war in SEA.I doubt that the kinda slack training that we have for our soldiers is enough for them to survive in a war or we r v well prepared. Lets not tok abt the fitness, look at their mentality(kind of weak).All of us should knoe la. I got Korean guy friends who told me that ROK NSFs have to stay in for 24 months coz they are posted to camps very far away from their homes(you know how big Korea is compared to us?),last 2 months then clear ORD leave.You go to SAF forum and see how many of the current NSFs so anxious and stressed about staying in...for 5 days only...

er...is the physical fitness of e soldiers in e SAF comparable to dat of those from ROK?

Their regular units will thrash our boys in determination and fitness, but with regards to Spec Ops..i'm not too worried.

The defense of SAF is more dire in comparison to ROKR.
They have got USA aircraft carriers in the region , and some american bases , with basically over 600,000 troops.
East Asian parties would likely to involve China North Korea vs Taiwan Japan SK combined.
USA would step it in and probably turn the tide.
But i have serious doubts that Japanese Navy would lose out to China. -
Malaysia don't really mean it when it comes to war , they can wayang all they want.
Just like when their foreign minister say , " ........................... if not we go to war."
But China and North Korea mean every word they say.
Thats why SAF = singapore acting force
Their M'sian colonel can also talk cock of cutting off water supply and putting poison . In the end also nothing what. -

SAF impose tough training, people "KaoBei", soften up on training still people "KaoBei".

Koreans are techically still at war, definitely they are tougher than our counterparts.
Have to agree our side quite slacken. But doesnt mean tough soldier will win the war all the time.
SG foreces more for deterrant in nature our mission is not to fight prolong war. -

But I think the problem is the lack of "patriotism" in our citizens. NSF always think "Serve for what, waste my 2 years" or "The army don't need me la, I 2 push up also cannot do". They don't see the importance of serving NS. They don't see the threat Singapore is facing, they take security for granted and last but not least. do they even love our homeland? (I've yet to serve my NS)
While people from SK, from my understanding, they are kind of loyal to their country. Soldiers regconize that the threat is VERY real for them. Bitterness of the korean war are still very fresh in some of them.
They take pride in their job and they put in commitment and effort, this is possible because SK soldiers love their country and they regconize the threat they are facing.
In my opinion it all boils down to patriotism. -

It is compulsory for every soldier, police and even those in airforce & Navy, to practise taekwondo in Korea, but I don't believe ALL korean soldiers are black belt.. unless u can show me a source which said so.. -
Suicide rate in ROK army is very high.
Close to 100 every year. Recently a soldier slaughtered his own section with grenades and his rifle before he killed himself. -

Yes, we really are Boy Scouts compared to the Koreans. But Korean men have always been slightly on the "brutish" side. I've met some Koreans, the older ones especially, are real "unrefined".
They mentioned that one of the things to have to do during NSF is come winter, they all have to strip off and take a swim in the icy lake.
The Koreans also have a very advanced arms industry.
The Koreans have already built their own MBT which is comparable or better than the Leopard 2.
The Japs have also long been building their own MBTs and again, I think their latest is based on the Leopard 2.
The Korean already have a 155mm SP howitzer in service that is 52 calibre long. Our Primus SP has a gun that is only 39 calibre.
And both Korea and Japan have always operated top line fighter planes before anyone else in Asia. -

True lar, I won't disagree that the S.Korean soldiers are a whole lot tougher than the SAF. And thats when u look at things at a broad spectrum. But remember, they are still only honoring a ceasefire with N.Korea. The war is essentially NOT over.
I've spoken to some korean friends who came over to Singapore before. While its true that they are very garang... but there are lots of complaints about their overly tough training. For trainees to die is COMMON over there. Its a loss which their country can withstand I suppose. In Singapore's case, every man we lose is a significant impact to our 4million people strong nation.
If we can modify our training such that its safe, nevermind a lil slack, we can still overcome that "garang" edge with technology. -
It's one thing to be garang, it's anothing thing to get the job done. Singaporean soldiers are not fierce. They do not burn with aggression. They also may not be the fittest soldiers in the world. However, if you give Singaporean soldiers a task to do, they will complete it, no matter how long it takes or how hard it is. They will learn what they need to learn, plan what needs to be done, adapt to the situation and finish the job. That is what matters in war -- mission success.
