To be frank, their equipment is bloody obsolete and vintage. But they know how to make use of it well despite its crapiness and operate well.Thats what i call a true special forces unit.

FN-FAL?

kopassus is their elite unit, so I dun think so their equipment is anything but lousy.
FN-Fal if I'm not wrong is 7.62 calibre, could be a strategic decision not to use 5.56mm so if the ammo fallen to enemy hands they can't use it.

They are using the Belgium FN FNC. Its produced in Indonesia under license as the SS1, and fires the 5.56mm round. I think its a good rifle - the FN SCAR is based on it.
Kopassus are very well trained, they have access to other better equipment as well.
The Unofficial Site of Indonesian Special Operation Forces -
Mixed track record - impressive achievements sometimes, tainted by human rights offences especially murder.
Trained and funded by US at first and abandoned later on due to US foreign policy shift. They didn't have enough funds and had to be very resourceful at obtaining equipment and weapons.
They are highly-trained and highly motivated. They also have a counter-terrorist unit - Kopassandha - which performed a successful hostage rescue in Thailand's airport in 1981. If I remember correctly, 2 of Kopassus members were killed, one by friendly-fire or accidental discharge during the assault. Their weapon for the raid, I think, was the Uzi.
"The (terrorist) group, dubbed 'Komando Jihad' , succeeded in bombing the Borobudur Buddhist temple in Central Java and in 1981 hijacked a Garuda aircraft to Bangkok. This hijacking was ended by a group from Kopassandha (Komando Pasukan Sandhi Yudha, or Covert War Force Command - an earlier name for Kopassus), who boarded the plane and killed three of the hijackers (one of whom was shot dead while being escorted from the plane), the other two being killed on the return flight to Jakarta "
They really don't believe in taking prisoners.

yes yes the kopassus are very very elite very very tough, equal if not better den our own SOF.
they really have my respect. no doubt they have quite outdated weapons but they did pretty well. give them better weaponary to train and they would be a formidable force. but i can't see it due to their bad national economy
how long is their trg? 1 yr?
the Indonesians have different special forces for their own services! army being kopassus, navy marines and the airforce the paskhasau!
each force have their own specialization. meaning their training will be specific and they have a elite force to choose from for all the different types of mission.

Kopassandha (Komando Pasukan Sandi Yudha) is the old name of Kopassus.
The counter-terror team within Kopassus is Satuan 81 Penanggulangan Teror or SAT81 Gultor. There are a number of books and magazines which feature good articles about the TNI. (I read Angkasa and the special editions)

Kopassus sounds like a kilat unit. Shouldn't look down on them. West Papua, Aceh and East Timor shows how they can be ruthless.
During East Timor, their units probably impersonated as pro-Indonesia militia and engaged UN troops.

the indonesians use special forces very differently than what other more conventionally organized military would, firstly, they have a massive archipelago and a huge population to defend, and a comparatively small military budget to play with ... their strategy is to concentrate on unconventional military forces and use their huge land area and islands to their advantage .... i.e guerilla warefare and "irregular" forces behind enemy lines, just like the way they threw out the Dutch .... thus Kompassus is not strictly the "special forces" a la navy seal as we would understand it ... but rather a highly trained military unit that will be used for unconventional warefare against a conventional attack on indonesia .... thus the indonesiand have a huge number of "special " forces compared to other militaries .... though of course, there are further elite units grouped together under kompassus ... which will be more akin to the "traditional" types of special forces ...
