Maybe you are right, coz the British simply had too many unfortunate mistakes that really should not have happened. It simply occured over and over again.Originally posted by BadzMaro:Correct me if i am wrong. But the British was over confident of thier Sole navel Battleship and expected a Naval assault hence replacing ALL thier AA guns.. thus succumbed to devastating airial assault and also didnt anticipate the Japs to come down so fast on thier asses. I forgot whats the name of the Battle ship that guarded Sg but it was an embarrasment to the British navy.. just like the HMS Hood.. sunk by the Bismarck with a direct hit to thier unprotected Ammo storage.. Coup De Grace =P

Anyway in Singapore, althought racism still exists i am glad to say that it is kept to the bare minimum. Let us Singaporeans work together for the safety of our country and the region.
Cheers!

[b]There were 2 ships, the HMS Prince of Wales and the HMS Repluse. Both were battleships with the Prince of Wales being quite new.In fact she was with the Hood when the Hood went down i believe. The Hood was an old ship hence her deck was wooden and not armoured.Causing massive damage when the KMS Bismarck fired on it.
That said, the British defending Singapore had in total more troops then the Japs. However no more then 15,000 out of the in some sources quoted as 100,000 were actual British or Commonwealth troops.
The rest were poorly trained, equiped and lead local soldiers who could not really do much tactically. While the japs were battle hardened and pretty much motivated and better equiped even though they were running low on supplies.b]
Their elite RDF 10th para brigade is stationed in Malacca which is also very near. Their defense minister said that the RDF can be mobilised within 1-5 hrs. The bde has 4500 soldiers, light tanks, surface-to-air missiles and artillery. I think they have exercises with close air support. Another force to be reckoned with.Originally posted by tvdog:They thing is they DO already have troops stationed in Johore.
On top of regular army units they have in the past decade also established airborne units in Johore.
So even if we implement our much vaunted "Forward Defense", it will not be a walk in the park. The minute we mobilise, their intel will also tell them to mobilise. So it is a matter of how quickly we can get into Johore before their main forces arrive. We would be up against some of their crack airborne troops in Johore.
they won't be flying .... they will probably be used to plug gaps in their defence the way we'll use our guards men ....Originally posted by Shotgun:All I can say is that they will need their parachutes. Cos they ain't gonna be flying very far...
speaking of which...they might have a offensive role should we really go to war..Originally posted by Fatum:they won't be flying .... they will probably be used to plug gaps in their defence the way we'll use our guards men ....
Why northern shores?Originally posted by Lance_han:speaking of which...they might have a offensive role should we really go to war..since they're airborne-qualified...a surprise low altitude drop on our northern shores...?

Not much space to land in Singapore.Especially with chutesOriginally posted by tvdog:Why northern shores?
They can "coastal hook" us in the West in Jurong with amphibious and airborne assault supported by their navy for example.
In fact, they can open up several other fronts besides the north.
Thanks heavens they are still too weak to really threaten us.
While it is true that the Jap airforce were unchallenged throughout nearly the whole campaign, did the Jap airpower play such a critical role during the ground war?Originally posted by archon1234:That is why from WW2 lessons, we can summarise few points:
1) Air force very very important.
Jap planes are unchallenged after 24 hours of the 1st air raid. They bomb the hell out of british command.
the costal hook is a precarious sitaution to be in...we don have a navy and airforce for show onliOriginally posted by tvdog:Why northern shores?

the sinking of the prince of wales and repulse, the opening salvoes on singapore at the start of their pacific campaign, the pin-point strafing\bombing on singapore... y not?Originally posted by tvdog:While it is true that the Jap airforce were unchallenged throughout nearly the whole campaign, did the Jap airpower play such a critical role during the ground war?
