Chinooks to the rescue again

  Singapore has sent three Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) CH-47 Chinook helicopters from its Peace Prairie detachment in Grand Prairie, Texas, to assist in relief operations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The helicopters arrived at Fort Polk, Louisiana, on the afternoon of 1 September (local time). They are based in Fort Polk for their mission.
  
  SingaporeÂ’s Chinook helicopters will be working closely with the Texas Army National Guard in their disaster relief operations. The RSAFÂ’s Chinooks will undertake resupply and airlift missions. Thirty-eight RSAF personnel, comprising pilots, aircrew and technicians, are deployed in this mission.
  
  The RSAFÂ’s Peace Prairie detachment has worked together with the Texas Army National Guard on other relief missions in the past, including relief operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina in 1999 and fire-fighting and flood relief operations in Texas in 2000.

  New Orleans is getting from bad to worst.
  There are reports of gangsters roaming the city commiting robberies and rapes amongt the strained residents and decaying corpses.
  Looks more like Bangladesh after a typhoon season.
  
  Makes such contrast with how the Thais & South Asians responded in the tsunami aftermath last Dec.

  If our Chinooks are deputized to the Texas National Guard, the shoot-to-kill order against looters and rioters currently issued by the Louisiana governor under their state of emergency will apply to our airmen. It will feel really strange if Singaporean doorgunners end up having to shoot American civilians.
  
  Bravo to the Chinook crews on this. Makes me feel proud to be a Singaporean. I wonder why it took so long for the Americans to issue the shoot-to-kill order when it was clear that the city was in chaos. After all, the rioters shooting at rescue workers and aircraft are actually killing off their fellow citizens who need help but can't get it. In such a case, shoot-to-kill is definitely justified.

  I don't think it's much of a wonder why the shoot-to-kill order took so long to be implemented.
  
  American soldiers shooting at American civillians on American soil isn't exactly something to sniff at.
  
  That said, rapists and gunmen who shoot rescue workers deserve to be shot.

  that shoot to kill order was probably for show ... if that order was carried out the politician who issued it would be out of office so fast his seat will be still warm ...
  
  and of course, there'll be enough lawsuits to keep america's lawyers employed for the next 30 years ... besides, you really think singaporean (foreign) troops would ever be allowed to open fire on american civilians ? .....

  Yeah, if our Chinook team did very well, RSAF might get MH-47 Special Operation Chinook armed with miniguns at a discounted price.

  But if our aircrew is threatened, they will have to protect themselves, but I bet that none of them would have thought of firing on Americans as their first act of combat or hostility in training.

  But I remembered some years ago in a news report that in Europe (Norway???), a motor cycle gang had stolen a couple of AT4 LAWs, and actually fired one into a rival gang's building. Anyone remembered that story?

  The situation there is beyond belief! I can't imagine raping,looting,shooting and robbery and many other crimes at such a scale in a disaster-hit World superpower! I mean when the tsunami hit the countries around Indian Ocean not long ago, but you don't see chaos at this sort of scale then. These countries are third world countries some more. There are reports of shooting at rescue workers ,policemen and helicopters. Our RSAF personnel in the rescue effort may be in trouble.

  Lock and load But it would open up a can of worms if foreign troops were to fire on American protestors.

  Remember how the americans reacted when Michael Fay was canned? Our personnel should move out immediately if fired upon!! It is not worth risking our guys and our reputation doing a relief work. If the yankee were shot, they will never remember that our guys were there to help!!

  I think they should have weapons on board.The LNG orders were to shoot-to-kill.But I think our Chinooks there have US markings too.

  I guess it might be possible that there will be a couple of armed National Guardsmen on board the Chinooks to oversee things.
  
  If the sh*t truly hits the fan, then it'll be the US soldiers who'll be doing the shooting.
