Ooh, Malaysia Boleh campagin gimmicks again.
Malaysia is ready to proclaim to be the "Wu Lin Meng Zu" of ASEAN liao. If u read at the annoucement of the Malaysia Boleh gov:
1) Announce buying SU-30MKM with heavy mod on airframe for extra take-off load.
2) Announce Malaysia space programme; 2007 for the first bumi to go to space in russian spacecraft and followed by manned moon mission in 2020, in par with Jap and China man!!!
3) Buy extra Meko OPV to build up a fleet of 20+ ships
4) Buying a total of 90-100 PT-91 and new russian AT missiles
5) Buying new medium range SAM from china
6) Buying new french scropene submarines and construction of new underwater bases!!??
7) Want to buy AWAC as well
Buying new Atos MLRS system to add bite to MAF -

PERSONALLY: The photographer no standard in taking the pics! I mean, crop here and there...surely some decent pics exist out there!
Anyway, it is good that M'sia possess such a heavyweight, at least it will 'convince' the SAF top brass to finally dump the SM-1s!
Being a tankee myself, I really hate to be staring at the PT-91 with its barrel facing me in the event of real conflict!

If light tanks are what we need, then buy some modern light tanks for chrissake.
But personally, I hope we get some modern MBT.

Don't worry about the modern MBT, we should be worried more about our SM1 replacement instead.

Somehow, I think that's a mistake.
As long as we need infantry troops on the ground to win wars, you need tanks to give them the punch. That's what the tank was invented for, and I don't think it can be replaced in this role. It's nice to have something "above and beyond" but as a complement, not as a replacement for the tank.
If by "above" you are referring to aircraft or attack choppers, well... these things have a habit of sometimes not showing up just when you need them. In nearly every account of battles I've read, things usually don't go according to plan.
And a chopper is not invincible either. -

Subsequent tanks in the selection process have all been MBT of 30tons and above.
The neighbouring countries have MBTs in their inventories. Centurion down south, M60 up north. Also, rumoured by the SG boys (could be wishful dreams), they have Merkava too.
So anything less than a MBT with a 120 or 125mm gun will not do for MAF.

Those people down south have always been wanting to have the Merkava. All they can do with the tanks is keep them in store and deploy it in Australia for training. The 60ton monster wouldnt even stand on the a normal highway much less on soft ground.
The Gen now is the Amb. in Pakistan. He is a close friend of my father, as a matter of fact they were in the army together. His appointment in Pakistan is useful given the fact that Musharraf is Gen as well. I wont be surprise if he is the reason Msia bought the Bakhtar Shikan and the Anza.
I was in the airborne reserves for about a year. That was 7 years ago. Didnt manage to get my jump wings because the diplomatic service called me into service. But I did manage to make 4 jumps (I needed 8 jumps to get my wings) from C-130Hs. It was an experience to live for. -

If Singapore wants to buy , i don't think it has the problems of purchasing.
Singapore buys not for the reason of wayang during national day parades but for the reason of using it in actual combat. -

When m'sia purchase some tanks , singaporeans make so much noise.
On the other hand , when it comes to forward defense ,
Would the local minority population support an invading force which promises to give full meritocracy on the land they rule on.

Not to worry even our older SACLOS weapons like the Milan 2 should be able to destory a T-72; French forces equipped with the original Milan successfully knocked out Iraqi T-72s during the Gulf War...
Against a modern Fire-and-Forget Spike or Hellfire 2 missile with dual warheads, the T-72 would be easy meat... -

but a couple of matadors could...
the matador may be a heavy mofo...but the HEAT round packs a punch if aimed at the proper weak spots...nobody engages a tank head on... -
You just need to disable the tank. An inmobile tank is good as dead in a jungle or urban setting. Followup rounds will finish it off.

The older HEAT and HE rounds are only good against enemy APCs/IFVs and troops respectively. -

Should be the T-84 that the Malaysian Army was evaluating before they decided on the PT-91M. -
IT IS the T-84... from ukrain....
heard that most of the time... the T-84 was "literary" dragged through malaysia using a heavy tractor becos its too heavy.... and got stuck so often... the driver decided to "drive" the tank from the tractors' driver seat..
