Can Hear Artillery shells flying?

maybe abit noobish but can we actually hear the arty shells flying thru the skys when it's over us? like those whistling or what?
cos i remember BMT got one crap drill that made us run like mad. think arty drill or something.
what about InterContinental Ballistic Misslies or anything thing of that sort? will we actually be able to hear them whizz by? -
YESH!....ask those who did arty live firing...
but you dun actually hear "whiee..." its just the feeling that something fly past....and its scary if its flying over your head!

Actually u can hear the "whizzzzz" only if u are in very close proximity below its flight path. And yea.. its very scary indeed... -
i have been thru arty live firing, the sound is not a "whizzz" but more like "zhe-zhe-zhe-zhe" very rapidly.
If i am not wrong mortar shells have "whee" sound, but i really do not know.
arty shell speed at low charge is 300+ m/s (which is around speed of sound), but it can go much faster at higher charge, 600+ m/s is common.
however some people hears a ringing sound because they forget to cover their ears when the gun fires

apparently the zhe zhe zhe sound happened when the arty shells hit the ground..

As for ICBMs...you'd already be part of the air pollution by the time the sound arrives as ICBMs travel at Mach 6+ (could be much more)
