Russian stuff are actually quite cost effecient as compare to the US products. I would say that the russian stuff are more simple and more creative in design, but production technique still very crude as compare to western standard. But most important factor is that Russian stuff works! And it works at a cheaper price tag.

Russian hardware doesn't always work the way its advertised.
It is usually a tad more hardy. But, maintainence for the more sophisticated equipment has always been suspect. Look at the number of Indian MIG21s that have fallen out of the sky. -
I was under the impression that the Mig 21s "falling out of the sky" had more to do with the inherent aerodynamic instability of the airframe than actual maintenance issues with soviet bloc systems. I think it has something to do with giving trainee pilots aircraft /supersonic capable, high thrust to weight ratio to "TRAIN" in.
Come on, this thing has afterburners, and its really a very fast and maneuverable jet, u give to a trainee, he's bound to crash it. -
