I personally do not think well of our light tank project... The proposal is to use either the Bionix or (UVLP) Primus chassis... I feel that the Bionix is too lightly built to handle the stress of prolonged firing of a 120mm main gun. The Primus chassis, while providing room for more ammunition and sensors, has only light armour and is comparatively large for a light tank, comprising mobility. This is crucial since tank units complement the mechanised infantry, unlike artillery which operates further from the enemy lines. The selection of this chassis may impede progress through denser vegetation.Originally posted by tankee1981:I agree with Delta 5, we should get the licence and produce it ourselves. Of course, this is only after we have evaluated that it suits our needs. We can even made some modifications to it to suit us, like in the case of the Delta frigates where the end product and the original French design is quite different. We can incoporate our Spike missiles on the turret for example. We can increase the armour protection of it as we don't really need it to be air transportable.![]()
Actually it is a UDLP proposal so whether SAF accepted it is another qn, next is that the proposal is actually 3 chassis, the last one is the M8 chassis itself.Originally posted by Delta 5:I personally do not think well of our light tank project... Comments anyone?
Do enlighten me if i m wrong!! Was bionix and her armour designed intercepting one and having the ability withstanding a direct hit from a 120mm main gun munition. i doubt so. In fact none of the mechanised units has this advantage. Not Bionix, Not Primus, not to mention the "old man" SM-13. Ruling out Centurion cos we arent provided with the confirmed specification but only with lots of speculation.
Hello Moderator... Gary is saying having a chasis to sustain "firing a 120mm gun", not having a chasis capable of "intercepting" a hit from a 120mm round... Please...Originally posted by Orcishwarrior:Do enlighten me if i m wrong!! Hmm.You sure these are not the UDLP demonstrators?Originally posted by archon1234:Not many tanks could stand a blow from a 120mm guns, esp with the APFSDS rounds. Our AMX13SM1 maybe even too thin to trigger the fuse of the 120mm rounds.
personally, I have seen a M8 variants transported at the Jurong area. The tank really looks a bit like the bionix.
i think they also have some PRC type tanks right?Originally posted by gary1910:Well, Thailand on light tank alone have 3 types:
M41A3 Light Tank Qty:285
Stingray Mk1 Light Tank Qty:106
Scorpion Light Tank Qty:154
Some of these are actually in storage due to lack of funds for repairs and spares.
Another news is that the Royal Thai Marine Corps has selected the ASCOD light tank for its requirements in October 1999 and expects to place an order with Austria's Steyr-Daimler-Puch for 15 vehicles, one command post vehicle and one repair and recovery vehicle.
One thing the Thai has a very large armoured force but also a lot of rojak.
But currently I think they have problem maintaing all of them due to lack of funds.
Type 59 tanks?Originally posted by spencer99:i think they also have some PRC type tanks right?
Yup, PRC Type69 MBT, but most are in storage now.Originally posted by spencer99:i think they also have some PRC type tanks right?
They have several good hardwares too. I think they are the 1st country in SEA to have the gunship helicopter AH-1S, Blackhawk helicopter, chinook and even the USA HMMWV.Originally posted by tankee1981:The Royal Thai Army sure have some pretty good tanks! My favourite is the Stingray. I think Singapore have evaluated this tank before according to my Encik last time but apparently it doesn't suit our needs.![]()
In what sense? it needs a loader making the crew number 4 instead of 3?Originally posted by tankee1981:The Royal Thai Army sure have some pretty good tanks! My favourite is the Stingray.
