The 133-foot-long steel vessel, built by Dakota Creek Industries of Anacortes, Wash., is a one-quarter-scale model similar to the NavyÂ’s new DD(X) class of destroyers.
With angled sides, knife-blade bow and rudderless underside, the Sea Jet will allow the Navy to test hull and bow designs, as well as new technologies in propulsion, fuels, stealth and materials, program director Steve Shreppler said.

Similar to the water-propulsion systems on recreational personal watercraft, the Navy wants to test the characteristics of the rudderless, propellerless propulsion system, Cohen said.
After that system is tested — a process that could take up to two years — the Sea Jet will be revamped for another test. Its stern will be cut off and replaced with one powered by a podded propulsion system developed by General Dynamics Electric Boat that relies on a permanent magnetic motor to drive the propeller, Cohen said.
