Erm... The PLA is a pretty impressive force to be reckoned with, let's not be ignorant about this. Can they deploy all their forces and ensure morale? You bet.Originally posted by SpecOps87:The day when war comes to Singapore is the day where although I may not have voted for the current party in power,I am willing to fight. Why?Its not for myself, but its for what ever background I have here, for my relatives,my friends,my fellow country men. Communist thinking or not...The SAF trains its troopers to be thinking soldeirs of the 21st Century. Can you gurantee that China's army are even that close to their training? Also, even if you have the world's largest standing army, what makes you so certain that you will be able to deploy all your forces and ensure that their morale and goals are there.Even in the SAF, the most chao keng soldiers can be relied upon when the need arises. But can yours? We are after all arm-chair generals talking about the outcome and performance of war...but will everything is under an "if this happens" scenario, there is no definite answer for the true outcome

What are the two of you talking about? I thought this thread is supposed to be "possible weaknesses of SAF"? Why do you have to get defensive on my personal opinion and try to compare to PLA? A weakness is a weakness, doesn't matter how's the condition in other armies. I was just spelling out the impressions I got.Originally posted by SpecOps87:The day when war comes to Singapore is the day where although I may not have voted for the current party in power,I am willing to fight. Why?Its not for myself, but its for what ever background I have here, for my relatives,my friends,my fellow country men. That's very true.We have to look in the context of our security situation, and if I were to peek into the future, i would say that the biggest foe we might have to face is not our neighbours, and instead, we would be fighting alongside them if SEA is ever threatened by militarism again.Originally posted by 84mmrr:Most of us are not professional soldiers in the 1st place. why improve military skills when it's not our career? Yes, we'll probably do our best during our reservists training but we have our daily bread and butter issues to handle. National defense is definitely our concern in general. But the probability of war is so low that the urgency is not there.
But can you imagine what a nightmare it would be if we fight against the Malaysians? Our helmet, uniform and weapons all look too similar.Originally posted by LazerLordz:That's very true.We have to look in the context of our security situation, and if I were to peek into the future, i would say that the biggest foe we might have to face is not our neighbours, and instead, we would be fighting alongside them if SEA is ever threatened by militarism again.

What is OPFOR?Originally posted by SingaporeTyrannosaur:omitted..
In terms of agression and competence you'd be surprised by how we measure up to other professional armed forces like the US army. While training against their OPFOR in the US, a rifle platoon of NSFs and not regulars impressed the americans by achieving a kill loss ratio that was half that of the norm for their OPFOR engagements. The OPFOR soldiers commented on how the "little guys in dark green" were killing them from as far as 300m and how they would rather face their own troops then SAF riflemen NSF.

I always wonder what is the objective of such exercises?Originally posted by bcoy:On the subject of military exercises - I've been involved on a number of exercises where my company or battalion (depending on the scale of the exercises) played the enemy troops. In most execises, we are told, ultimately, to let the larger, friendly forces, overrun us. Even if we played hard - we still let them win. People who have been involved in these exercises should know this better, and understand the circumstances and objectives of the exercise play, rather than to listen to "tales".
I've been on exercise with the US Marines - my company played enemy - going against a force of US Marine battalion plus, supported by their amphibious APC, plus the rest of my battalion (the remaining 2 companies plus the support company). Of course they will overrun us.
Same thing during BTEC - my company played enemy against one infantry battalion - we defend, then let them overrun us, as according to the needs of the exercise. Results - Infantymen going around with tales of how they beat a Guards unit.
But of course - my company have gone successfully against other larger forces. That is a different story.
