What? if anything, will ever make the tank obsolete?

I've always wondered about this. Tanks are essentially mobile pillboxes/strong points. 2000 years ago the chariot was the tank of the Assyrians and the Egyptians only to be made obsolete by cavalry and changing infantry tactics. It reappears again and again in some form or another.
A tough question. I do not think that it will ever be replaced, only limited for a time and then taken out of mothballs or reinvented.
Could I be wrong? -

If you happen to read the starship troopers book, you'll note that tanks are made obsolete by the jumpsuits that the soldiers wear. They have jump jets and their guns are super powerful.
Maybe an improvement in ballistic technology will make tanks useless. -

but it's the method of how the weapon was employed\conceived tat made it useless...

Next on the line would be anything that is remote controlled -
I think the tripods from war of the worlds will absolutely destroy the tanks.

Perhaps light strike vehicles which are armoured and travel on 4X4 wheels with higher cross country speeds and more fuel efficient would be useful as resources in combat is extremely scarce. Something like the American Stryker system...perhaps we can adopt the Terrex and have modualr weapon systems whcih can be mounted according to the various mission needs.
Urban compat these days require heavy armour,high speeds and hard hitting power,which tanks cannot provide.Though they are perfect in the sense that they can have heavy armour and hard-hitting power,but still,an RPG round fired from the top of a building can easily take out a tank. -
The future will be dominated by cheap, mass produced remote controlled vehicles.. be it tanks or whatever... In that scenario what counts would be numbers not firepower or armor since you will be swarming the enemy anyway...
Hell why not let them be AI controlled even? -

Depends on which type of tank and what type of terrain? No clear answer to that question. It is probably easier to make MBTs obsolete in deployment in urban or confined terrains.
