The damn Taiwanese "hum" needs a cucumber from your veggie farm.
Try stuffing down that "hum" - it will be only too happy to be given the opportunity to have a cum back into your corner.
" think we are talking about the ability to speak mandarin to communicate and do business, and speak proper english to be on par with the american or other english speaking businessmen, there is no perfect english and mandarin.
If we need to do business in China, we need to speak mandarin so that we are no worse off than any PRC, speak proper english so that we are no worse off than the americans, the brits, and any other nationalities who speak english.
If you do business in Singapore, speak singlish ok liao.
think harder...."
I just want to make a conclusion observation...
I believe the notion that Singaporean can't speak Mandarin well in doing business in China is simply a Govt social engineering in distraction. Personnally I think it is a mistake to revise the identity of Singapore unique position between East and West. Which fall outside the influence of cultured restriction.
By bending our back to appease the PRC by fundamentally changed the pysche of our mindset it create division for the generation down. In 20 years we are seeing another division created while the older generation are far more open liberal than the younger generation with a centrist view around the post Communist China.
Is it really about comprehending "Mandarin" or the way we understood PRC?
Singaporean has been doing Business with Taiwan for the longerest time. Not to mention the thousand of training troops that visited ROC to smoke with their girls during R & R. Other than simplified characters being an issued. There were Never an issued with understanding or spoken language.
So why is there such an issued with PRC......not to mention that Singapore adopted simplified characters in the 70s.
The main issued lies in the fact that Singaporean are ignorant of the impact on its people during Culture revolution and communism....Superficially just because they have cars and modern facilities they suddenly become "Educated"
PRC communicate with "INTEND" while Singaporean communicate as language said what you mean. PRC has a tendency to map your "intend Space" before approaching and sizing up you up and take what they want.
While at the same time SG lack the social skills by telling our PRC counterpart what they want "Opening up Intend". So we end up exposing our weakness to let them expliot.
So perharps it is not about importing a new teaching method or changing our language to learning Mandarin first. Cause if we truly want to learn we would still learn our individual dialect.
It is to understand more about the influence of PRC and the post communism Chinese.

If China had remained true to Mao's political ideology - would LKY have been as excited with China as a market of one billion people ?
Is it any surprise that in the 1980s - LKY should accuse JBJ for his avarice in seeking public office, and will again in 1990s accuse CSJ of the same charges ?
If it is all about MONEY that LKY sees as everyone's goal in entering politics to gain the seat of government - it is only obvious that he knows best from his own avarice that is now so clearly displayed, and which seems to be insatiable.
Does it surprise anyone that LKY will want to drive Singapore closer to China's market opportunities of a billion people that he see as waiting to be tapped on ?
At the end of it all, it is about MONEY - which LKY is so familiar with, when after WW2, he had to eke out a living as a building contractor to repair homes, and as a labourer supplier - to save enough money to pursue a tertiary education in England, and to pursue a girl from a family far wealthier than his.
It was all about the Power of MONEY that got LKY to fear the PRIVATE WEALTH - which can fund and control political parties. This fear got LKY to draft the laws to prevent anonymous donations abover $1,000 to any political parties in Singapore.
It was the fear of PRIVATE WEALTH that got LKY to seize control of the Turf Club, when it was a private club that existed in every British Colony - as seen in the famous turf clubs in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, and even Colombo in Sri Lanka (previously known as Ceylon).
These Clubs in private hands conducted lottery to spread its wealth to the common folks to have a lucky break in their lives - and with excess funds being donated to charity. Still it drew the suspicion and mistrust of the PAP and it had to be brought under control with its own appointees ensuring control of the funds.
MONEY is POWER - and the PAP knows about the power of citizen's money, which require a new form of control - Wage Control that keeps the population under the influence of a tamed Worker's Union that is itself controlled by the PAP and never by the workers.
The Citizens can be paid well and live well but up to a controlled point, as when the entire population gets beyond a certain point of wealth, it will be beyond the control of the PAP; and there will no longer be that ability to have a grip and influence that it would have got over a population that is perpetually dependent on the PAP.
After 42 years in power - since 1957 - what has the PAP achieved for Singaporeans - who are still struggling and dependent on MNCs that require a cheap labor force for them to invest in Singapore ?
After 42 years in power, Singaporeans continue to struggle to get three meals a day, and at a higher price - as the present monetary value is lower then our forefathers - who did not have to struggle as much during the period BEFORE the PAP got into power in 1957, even as the PAP propaganda will have us to believe otherwise.
Dollar for Dollar - the value of the Singapore Dollar was stronger before the PAP took over in 1957 compared to the value of the currency today - all factors considered.
If LKY believed that the PAP had done a great job in Singapore, why will he insist on tapping into the China grid - despite the insistence in China continuing with its new path towards Communism ?
Considering the seemingly deep seated "Anti-Communist" attitude that LKY has towards Singaporeans whom he label as Communists - it is amazing that he will insist on having Singapore plugged to the Communist China grid.
It clearly show the deceit and duplicity of the one and only Master Communist Autocrat that control Singapore and everyone in an island paradise built for his own pleasure.
Wow the hatrad here for our dominant political party sure runs deep.
But perhaps expressing them in a more refined and mature tone will make me take it more seriously.

Like your personal fancination with killing LKY....
china wont stick to mao principle of making and keeping gold and richses for china.it is not the chinese way. the chinese people are more practical then to blindly simply follow.they may look like they are following but in every move they make they are ISalways questioning amongst themselves "IS THIS THE RIGHT MOVE OR NOT...CHEE@#%^....IM WASTING PRECIOUS TIME WHEN I COULD BE DOING SOMETHING BETTER!"ALL IN SILENCE.
SO AS IN SPORE CASE......IT IS NOT PRACTICAL ....MATTER OF TIME BEFORE EVERY DUMB POLICY THATS USED TO MAKE LIFE DIFFICULT N RELATED TO POVERTY WILL BE ELIMINATED UNDER SPOREAN ETHNIC CHINESE THOUGHTS.
BUT DO WE HAVE THE TIME TO MAKE IT HAPPEN BEFORE A GENERATION?

It is wrong to link the use of Mandarin to understanding PRC, or worse, appeasing the PRC.
Language is a tool to communication and acquisition of knowledge, and some languages carry the value of cultures, and are part of the cultures.
English is very much a tool with very little value in culture! Pilipino speaks fluently English but they have little or no English culture. Chinese was a carrier of Chinese culture, and its role as a tool has gained significance over the last 20 yrs, and would be more important in time to come.
But Chinese culture is not PRC culture! Chinese culture in China took a major step back during the cultural revolution, while 三国演义,红楼梦,together with Cantonese movies, Theresa Tsang’s “月亮代表我的心”, 金庸’s“ç¥žé›•ä¾ ä¾£” …continued to be spread and shared among millions of Chinese overseas.
We need to guard against the emergence of Chinese nationalism, balance the rise of Chinese military power, take advantage of the mega growth in Chinese economic power, that won’t be done in English. Either we learn mandarin so that we can engage them, especially in their own turf, or they will breath down our neck in English.
Before the 80s, there were the Chinese educated Singaporean who could master mandarin as well as the Chinese from Taiwan, and there were the English educated who could speak English that the queen can understand. Today, we lament the poor standard of English in Singapore, the mandarin that many Singaporeans speak can hardly be understood, and definitely not the standard for any business. If our troops were sent to ROC to learn mandarin, they failed, can your learn a language while smoking with girls?
As a people, Singaporean must realize that we lack, or we need to recognize our root and culture, our ethnicity, our national identity, and banana culture should not the culture of Singaporean Chinese. LKY admitted he failed in the method of teaching mandarin, Chinese parents in Singapore must now realize that they cannot depend on the government or politicians to teach them who they are, let alone telling them how to live their live. PRC is never part of the story

Lee PM, these peoples here are not just merely opposition supporters, they are the opposition failed poltician themselves, and for the past 50 years, they cannot even win the dominant party here, so, you should know how frustrating and desparate they are...if you manage to attend a opposition rally, be sure to see some serious looking old uncles on stage, these are the people I am talking about, and some are on IMH medication.

A parallel thought process by most Singaporean....
They wait for a party to be able to take over the government than they vote?
You want to wait until this forum to have a more mature tone.....before you Pen.
In America election other than the work of Civil Right movement for the last 100 years that made it possible for President Obama to have an Education and Opportunity to stand for Election. It was also the people desire to change "immediately"....Remember the voters turn out to vote for someone without experience.
If you want to rise your opinon...in anyway why wait? You want to disagree by all means so long as you are not like Angel7030.

Agree. Too many Singaporeans adopt a wait-and-see attitude, even though a simple vote is just what an individual needs to start making changes to the current situation
end up, too many of us vote for the incumbent just because they don't see other choices (which is what the incumbent wants us to believe through media blackouts of opposition rallies, and lawsuits that instils fear on those that dare to step out).
And I think LPM's statement that "Hatred runs deep" is too extreme. It's more "dis-satisfaction" for most, than "hatred"
for instance, I want DPM Wong Kan Seng to step down for allowing Mas Selamat to escape on his watch, is not a statement of hatred, but a demand for accountability amongst our top leaders.
It is not the first time he admits his mistakes but he never apologise to the people of Singapore. Seems he has prerogative to make mistakes, hahahaha.
Arrogant!!!! I have heard politicians apologise to their people but never hear it from lky. Arrogance does not qualify one to be a good leader.

I shall reply by section....

I think you should not confused with pop literature such as 月亮代表我的心”, 金庸’s“ç¥žé›•ä¾ ä¾£ vs a more traditional literature of more chinese literature such as 家,春,秋. (I completed all the mention books before age of 16)
Most of Singaporean are southern chinese who are embeded to Tang dynasty. One very obverse tradditional.....ever attend a chinese taoist funeral all aspect of Tang tradtion are in displayed more than religion tone. Our Grand parents and great grand parent who migrated to Singapore preseved those tradition.
The Current Chinese government that the world sees are basically none other than the 2nd generation Communist transiting to a authoritarin regime. Using common ethnicity as a blanket tool to conform Singaporean behavior.

Just because we don't pursued English as a career doesn't means it has no contribution to humanity and its value...Shakespeare, Joyce, Austin, Virginia Wolf, TS Eliot. They have demonstrated the value of the English language.
Would it be more sensible to assume that 200 years from now a merging of language from South East Asia similar to English?
Ever thought that the fact we apply so many Malay words in our chinese dialect those were the language our grandparent used. We inherited the language its the melting pot of culture right infront of our eyes but we refused to See....
The path we should take is done so unconsiously and effortlessly rather than forcing something we are not. Because we will never be....
if you truly want to change than you have to re-teach Dialect which is impossible than the dangerious path we walk upon is the same as introducing Cultured Revolution into our children........
