Why land scarcity is a problem, especially in Singapore?
becos, the property will keep going up and in turn move everything up leading to high cost of living and life will be more miserable for those living in HDB, you can see the guy changing cloth too
Land scarcity is a problem because it restricts us in buiding mega complexes, large artistic monuments and houses that can contain an amusement park and a zoo. It is especially a problem in Singapore because of culture. We are narcissistic group of people and having this restriction has serious impact on our mental well being and it is a common cause of psychological disorders.
There are land away from the city area of Singapore not used. Guess it has got to do with $$$. Land here are not fetching high price compare to those in the city areas.
Scarcity? All depends on what definition it is with the ruling party.
Okie, with this post, i hit 10k posts.
ha ha ha.
My friends.are u new to singapore.can u read Google Earth first.
1.OFFICE SPACE
do u know Marina South, abt 300 plus ha,can double up office floor area
in whole SINGAPORE.Thats is,if currently there is abt 70 million sq ft office space
in whole SG,
Marina South can provide another 70 million sg feet office space.
I am not talk abt Marina East yet.
2.Residential and industries
Changi Airport is 1250 ha or 12.5 km sq--km2.
--Jurong island .new reclaimed land 20 km2 since 1995.
--Tuas Extension --abt 20 km2.since 1995.
--Changi East abt 25 km 2--abt two times of the Changi airport.
---Tekong Island---abt min 20 km2.....
The shortage of sands dunt affect our immediate needs.
Majority of All these reclamations is for your children or grand children.
3.compare Google Earth and
u can read from
4.anyone say SG is short of land is either physically blind or his mind is blind.
Why land scarcity is a problem, especially in Singapore?
Maybe because Singapore is small, population big?

got, chicken farm at geyland and duck farm at joo chiat

no, the population is not big, just that many uncles and aunties are getting fatter and bigger...good life mah...so no space liao

Oh dunt be so greedy lah.We cant aim for low value added primary production.
1.Water catchment---two third by 2011 and 90% later
currenlty, half of land is for catchment.SG is one of the pioneer in Urban Catchment.
currently, local catchment provide half of SG water needs!!
Beige in color is current water catchment area.Green is water
catchment area of proposed Reservoirs of Marina,Sg Puggol ,
Sg Serangoon and Lower Seletar. All the new and extended
reservoirs will be ready in 2 years .
Two third of land become catchment in 2011.
after completion of Marina Reservoir scheme (alrdy in operation but in e process
of desalination)and Punngol and Serangoon Reservoirs scheme,
Further, a new technology will treat mexture of sea and rain water
into potable water. When it is fully implemented,
90% of land become catchment.read below.
reda more here.
Bye bye MY water by 2011,search Part 1 and 2.

it depend how u do the TOWN PLANNING.
Big place like Oz also need impose water restrictions. Why?
Big place without proper planning and executions of polices also fail.

No. I think we got enough water to support ourselves under emergency ration circumstances but if you want to factor in argriculture and cattle for self sufficiency we won't have enough.
Originally posted by lionnoisy:Oh dunt be so greedy lah.We cant aim for low value added primary production.
Not being greedy. Just trying to tell you that land is scarce in Singapore. When you have to depend on others for food, land is scarce. When majority of Singaporeans live in "apartments" land is scarce. When you need to reclaim land, land is scarce.
Very basic.

question is without purchasing/recyling water, how long can that last ? To answer TS's very basic homework question.

You don't get a lot of rain in Australia.

who will think SG can be self sufficient in foods, except a great advance in technology.
do u dare to eat such food? 10 days veggie, instead of 3 months,
,one year pig to replace 4 years pig etc

Nobody will think that SG can be self sufficient. That is why TS had this homework question :" Why land scarcity is a problem, especially in Singapore?"

I'd say social order would crumble in a week, there would already be panic and hoarding on the streets on the first day.
Singapore isn't capable of supporting 4 million (or 6 million if we want to follow the government goal)on any level of comfort.

anyway, fyi..you are kinda consuming such food already. Without an advancement in technology we would probably have suffered the fate Thomas Malthus predicted.

i do believe LKY intentionally wanted only portions of the country to be urbanised.
We're not really running out of land persay,

We MUST need recycling water, but can forgo import water not later than 2015,
if we choose to do so!!BUt we wont waive our rights.Right?
Need for water conservation tax
Singapore's water supply from local sources has been diversified and made more robust with the introduction of Newater and desalinated water, as well as the development of additional local catchments including Marina, Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs.PUB is confident of ensuring Singapore's self-sufficiency in water supply if need be.
PUB thanks Mr Chan for his comments.

Pl note there is no time frame mentioned in this reply.
last time i think GCT put a meaningless time frame at 2061 that we can
self sufficient in water.wat the hell PUB needs a Asst.CE to answer
a forum letter?Have PUB want to send any message to SG people?
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
u can see my many calculations in old thread listed in my first reply today.
2.recycling is a must,like California
Now desalination plant provide abt 10% of needs.
NEWater will provide 30 % by 2011,100 % more than previously announced.
Thats by 2011,40 % of water from sea and sewage!!
BUT NO WORRY.Factories, like wader Fabs, oil refinery etc, take up almost
all NEWater.98 to 99%.Ok?NEWater is mainly aim for industries,
air cond cooling etc,not meant for drinking.Out of tap water
in your home or office, only one % ,yes one, come from NEWater,
after blending with rain water in reservoirs.
We still have Industrial Water to cut down demand of potable water,
like NEWater do so.
