Endangered species? For goodness sake, Lee Kuan Yew practically filled the entire cabinet with inbred Peranakans. For the last few decades in Singapore, the top positions in civil service, statutory boards, armed forces, GLCs have all along been going disproportionately to the Peranakans. That is one reason why Singapore has been run to the ground.
Lee Kuan Yew worked with the Japanese Kempeitai and later the British colonizers to suppress the non-Peranakan Chinese. That's why he has always been wary of non-Peranakan Chinese and could only entrust power to his own family members and his other Peranakan cronies.

if LKY said we speak dialect and forget about english, do you think you got a chance to post in this forums??? in english??
We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society
based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
progress for our nation.
Harry Lee Kuan Yew, the part about democracy we know that is bullshit.
But I am having doubts also about the "regardless of race, language or religion" part also.
I hope you can clarify Harry Lee Kuan Yew.
Around this time you were discussing the succession to PM Lee?
Lee Kuan Yew had been discussing this since about 1983. At that time, the second echelon was Tony Tan, S. Dhanabalan, Goh Chok Tong and myself.
Were you a candidate for the top job?
I was considered as a member of the group. At that time, we did not know who would be the successor to Lee. We finally made the decision to pick Goh Chok Tong. He agreed on condition that I agreed to be his number two. So I was the second DPM; he was the first DPM. In 1988, Lee asked Goh to take over, but he was not ready. He said: two more years. So two years later, he took the job.
Lee did not agree with your decision to pick Goh.
No, he did not disagree. He said he would leave it to us. His own first choice was Tony Tan. Goh Chok Tong was his second choice. I was his third choice because he said my English was not good enough. He said Dhanabalan was not right because Singapore was not ready for an Indian prime minister. That upset the Indian community. There was quite a bit of adverse reaction to what he said. But he speaks his mind. He is the only one who can get away with it.

Even after Singapore attained its independence in 1965, those with Peranakan roots carried on their long and distinguished record of public service into the present time. Among the eminent personages are Dr Wee Kim Wee, Dr Goh Keng Swee, Dr Tony Tan and the late Dr Ee Peng Liang.

Harry Lee Kuan Yew.
Don't lie to me.
Tell me the truth.
I want the truth.
Why did you ban dialects in state media.
This issue has been bothering me for decades already.
I see other people in their own countries can speak their own tongue but when it comes to my country it is suppressed.
I see the hokkiens in taiwan, their TV shows they use dialect, but I see our TV shows they ban and suppress.
Why?
I just want the truth, no lies.
Harry Lee Kuan Yew, tell me the truth.
Baba Harry Lee Kuan Yew Why did you ban dialects in state media?
To effectively promote Mandarin, we closed down all dialect programs on radio and TV from 1979. Also, I was setting a bad example making speeches in Hokkien in the 1960s and ‘70s to reach the largest number of Chinese. From 1979, some 30 years ago, I decided to stop speaking in Hokkien and switched to Mandarin. Had I not done this, Hokkien/Teochew will be the predominant common language for the Chinese in Singapore, not Mandarin.
The value of a language is its usefulness, not just in Singapore, but also in the wider world. If you speak Hokkien or Cantonese, you reach some 60 million in Fujian and Taiwan, or about 100 million in Guangdong and Hong Kong. With Mandarin, you can speak to 1,300 million Chinese from all provinces in China. Now, overseas Chinese and foreigners are learning Mandarin, not Chinese dialects. China is setting up 500 Confucius Institutes in different countries to teach Mandarin to many millions of people around the world.
I understand the strong emotional ties to one’s mother tongue. However, the trend is clear. In two generations, Mandarin will become our mother tongue.

Lee Kuan Yew.
Don't lie to me.
Don't talk cock to me.
Don't come and give bullshit reasons to me.
Just tell me the truth.
Policy Forum - Dialets in Singapore - The forgotten Tongue
The reason why dialects are forgotton among the younger generation is due to your policies Lee Kuan Yew. Not only the dialect, but also the culture, because a language is a carrier of culture.
Weaken language, weaken culture.
Tell me the truth Lee Kuan Yew.
I want the truth.

You are thinking in a non political way.
my 2c worth :
I find it puzzling that we allow dual soundtrack for Korean/Japanese dubbed serials y nt for Cantonese/Hokkien shows from HK/Taiwan respectively?
We should actively promote our roots rather than go with the trend of gong Korean/Japanese as mainstream
ie y if i can i watch more dialect on cable and listen to dialect stations on the NET since 958's dialect news has been shifted to unsuitable time slots
I personally find dialects more endearing, intimate when i speak to my elders and i speak as much as i can...
i can speak quite a good command of English/Mandarin
I find it puzzling that we allow dual soundtrack for Korean/Japanese dubbed serials y nt for Cantonese/Hokkien shows from HK/Taiwan respectively?
Exactly.
Exactly.
There are a lot of elders who only understand dialect.
You speak mandarin or english to them they don't understand.
So the chinese TV shows in mandarin they don't understand.
So why not use the dual sound format?
When it comes to foreign shows got dual sound when it comes to local shows no dual sound.
Are there more korean, Japanese speakers in Singapore than dialect speakers?
There is another agenda behind this.
It is a political agenda.
As the agenda is now obvious, I won't talk too much about it.
We are all like fools, being played around by these bastards.
This must end.
This must end.
It can't go on forever.
Uncle Chia, did you go toilet or not?? are u suffering from constipation
Adding onto my 2c worth...
Young SGreans stutter n stammer when our elderly approach them to ask directions/help in dialect, DISAPPOINTING...
i am exposing my kid to a Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien environment so that he can communicate with my elders when he grow up even though my elders at home are able to speak English/Mandarin...
I dun wan my kid to grow up asking me y he dun understand a "foreign language" that is spoken widespread in SG.
Elderly SGreans are not so NEt savvy to logon to internet to listen to cantonese/hokkien livecasts.
Further to add, Taiwanese have their "min nan hua" but they are still able to speak a better command and read "fan ti zi" compared to Chinese SGreans who are not able to get a good grasp of the chinese language even though they are exposed to so countless speak mandarin campaigns...
Culturally, we have not reach the level the all...

Dun tink so, wat he said abt Elderly SGReans dun understand English/Chinese is quite true and is a fact
James
Puthucheary, who was in charge of PAP publicity for the elections
recalled the first rally held in a remote Chinese village.
“Toh Chin Chye spoke first, in English! No response from the crowd. Ong Eng Guan was next, in Hokkien, but not very good. The crowd was restless. Then, Chin Siong stood up. He was brilliant and the crowd was spellbound.”
http://singaporegovt.blogspot.com/2006/07/history
Poulgrain claims it was actually Singapore's then Chief Minister, Lim Yew Hock, who had deliberately "provoked" the bus and other industrial workers and Chinese middle students to riot in 1956 in order to have Lim Chin Siong arrested.
Lim Yew Hock's own admission to responsibility for the riot appears in an official report to the British Government which Poulgrain found in the Colonial Office records in London which are now open to researchers.
"Lee Kuan Yew was secretly a party with Lim Yew Hock," adds Poulgrain, "in urging the Colonial Secretary to impose the subversives ban in making it illegal for former political detainees to stand for election."

saying is ok, but he is cursing and feeling desparate of wanting to get rid of something so urgently, that sound not so right.
I wonder if LKY was not born, how well his life would have been till now
I wonder if LKY was not born, how well his life would have been till now
Much better than now in my opinion.
I was wondering in the 1950s, 1960s how on earth could a peranakan who worked for the japanese during WWII can win an election in Singapore based on chinese dialect votes?
It's like someone from a minority group in China who worked with the Japanese during WWII can go and win votes in China and elected as leader.
How on earth is that possible?
You move heaven and you move earth also totally and completely impossible.
