HE took a shortcut and paid dearly for it.
In trying to shave off a few minutes from his travelling time, Mr Din (not his real name) almost lost his life.
The Singaporean was robbed and attacked by two men in Johor Baru last Wednesday and received 60 stitches for slashes on his back and head, reported Berita Harian.
Recalling the dreadful incident, MrDin, 38, said it happened around 7pm when he was riding through a narrow deserted lane to the immigration checkpoint on his motorbike.
Said Mr Din: 'I thought taking the short-cut would be safe but after going into the lane, I felt like I was being followed.

'Suddenly I was struck with what I thought was a long piece of wood. I turned around and I saw a man looking at me.
'We struggled and this time I was hit on the head with a metal bar. Then I realised there was not one but two men attacking me.'
He described how the two of them took out a folding knife and started slashing his back and even put the knife to his neck.
He then realised his life was at risk.
'They asked me if I wanted to live or die?
'They said if I wanted to live I'd better hand over all my belongings,' he said while adding that he believes one of them was a foreigner.
'Although I gave them my money, they were not satisfied. So they snatched my bag, passport and my identity card and fled.'
In addition, Mr Din also lost two handphones worth $500 and $320 in cash.
STARTED BLEEDING
He tried to chase the duo but his injuries were starting to hurt badly.
There was a lot of blood flowing down his back and his head.
He tried to seek help from passers-by but they paid no attention to him.
But one man stopped to help.
'Luckily there was one person who took me to a nearby police station so that I could make a police report,' he added.
He was then taken to the Sultanah Aminah hospital for treatment.
The Malaysian police later informed his wife who rushed over to bring him back home. -
I thot it was about JBJ... moral of the story? Do not walk or ride or drive in small deserted lanes when you are overseas... not just JB. Not even Singapore... remember the Terror of Clementi? The guy that raped three women... and what were the women doing? Taking a short cut through a quiet park...

the moral of the story is no to visit jb, period....given the high incident of crime, why singaporeans insist in heading north is beyond me...it's a death trap out there...abdullah needs to make the streets safe before the iskandar project can attract investors....

You should thank the PAP government for building roads directly to your house, for every road you take is a short cut, and you must also thank them for installing lights along these roads, now you don't need to take any risk to go home.
There is no justifications for the bigots, the rapists, and the robbers.

By your yardstick, every route you take has its risk. So why should a 'short-cut' be any different? In JB, it's clear as crystal that dimly-lit roads and pathways should be avoid at all costs due to obvious reasons.
Your claim that people get robbed because they take a 'short-cut' implies that generally these people 'deserve it' which is ludicrous, when it is plainly human nature to do so. The religious bigot example simply attenuates the error of your claim. -

To clarify, taking a short cut through a 'dark alley' definitely curtails a hightened risk; yet taking a 'short-cut' itself cannot be viewed as 'wrong'.
Is not taking the shortest or fastest route in the best interest of the everyone? Why walk further when you can 'short-cut'? Why else would some dash across the expressway on the TPE when there is an overhead bridge about 400m away? Why else would people cut across an open field if there was a proper pedestrian pathway nearby? As you already mentioned, the risk is there, so let the individual make his choice.

What sort of route are we talking about? I recall it was drilled into kids' heads back in primary school to avoid pathways that seem too quiet and deserted or too dark, more so for women. More Singaporeans should go to JB.
There is safety in numbers.
If you go to JB with a horde of Singaporeans, what are the chances of you being mugged?
The larger the numbers, the smaller the chances.
Therefore the chances will great that the other fellow get mugged.
But if it happen that the other fellow is you, take heart that you have spared someone else of being mugged. -
S'porean just have to REMEMBER that not everywhere is safe..... not even certain areas in S'pore itself
With SOOO many cases of robbery in JB and yet S'porean still believes that they are as safe as in S'pore.... and that is the problem.

a group of friends, around 5-6 of them, got surrounded by a larger group of malays in JB holiday plaza, robbed at knife point, infront of hundreds of shoppers.
where's the safety?
