Thanks everyone for your great comments! It's nice to hear your thoughts... now it's time for my other perspective:-Originally posted by fire & ice:Oh well, do we know whether this WHite House Official is what post? Many Officials you know....and definitely they will be quite happy to come here to run for government job but can they make it? Many times we have read that our system is envied by many others for its efficiency. The US? We have read much of their gossip and unsavoury comments too. He may want the job but he may not be qualified for the job.
Our government has been trained and mentored for their roles. They don't come out of nowhere. Such commitment needs to be rewarded too.

I apologize but I do not understand your comment here. If you would to elaborate, then maybe I will get a better view of what you are trying to tell me. Thanks.Originally posted by meqwerty:if by efficiency, u mean being paid the least possible for the doing a particular job, then we're probably one of the most efficient 1st world countries. and if u (in general), being at the brunt of it is willing to take that, why should ur employers make it otherwise. u pay peanuts, u get monkeys. this theory applies throughout all the levels of society. it is not to say, that u'll definitely get a good deal if u pay more. but the inverse is definitely true.

SINGAPORE: Police are investigating a theft in Pasir Ris that took place in broad daylight - vandals have taken, of all things, metal railings.
Support rails on an access path, specially built for the elderly and disabled, no longer exist at Pasir Ris Drive 6.
It is the same at Drive 1 also.
Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council says it would take at least three weeks to replace the railings, at a cost of S$20,000.
Some residents said they actually saw the suspected vandals at work, but did not realise they were witnessing a crime.
"I saw them sawing the railings around 3pm the day before. But I thought they were contractors. There were three workers, and another two men who looked like they were supervisors," says Pasir Ris resident Eliza Khong. - CNA/yy

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A senior White House official on Tuesday admitted he was floored by the news that Singapore's prime minister earned five times more than US
President George W. Bush.
"I'm going to emigrate and run for office in Singapore," the official said on condition he be identified only as "a senior administration official who sits in disbelief after reading that story."
On Monday, the Singapore government had announced a fresh 25.5 percent pay hike for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, boosting his salary to 2.05 million dollars per year.
Bush gets paid 400,000 dollars per year for doing his job, according to the White House.
Combined with personal investment income, he and his wife Laura reported 618,694 dollars in taxable income in the 2005 fiscal year. They had to pay 187,768 dollars in federal taxes.
But maybe Bush shouldn't feel so bad. The Singaporean's paycheck is eight times fatter than Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's.

And if he doesn't become a minister, can he earns millions as a surgeon or businessman or CEO? The skillset of these occupations are completely different, because you have the talent to come out with plans to wipe out dengue fever, will that give you the skill to perform demanding operations on a person's brain? Or help you sell more mp3 players than Apple? LSL had a mathematical degree, if he didn't become the PM could he had become a mathematical prof earning millions? Or a CEO?Originally posted by unclebutcher:if you think about it...in terms of economics...
opportunity cost- if a minister can earn millions as a surgeon or businessman or CEO, and he is very talented, if Singapore govt. doesnt pay him highly, will he become a minister???
granted, there are some who would not earn millions if they work in private sector. but we do need these high salaries to attract the top talent to form the nucleus of the parliament.
Originally posted by unclebutcher: also, they will not succumb to bribery with their high salary. do u think they want to risk being kicked out of the gravy train just for a a few hundred thousand extra...which is much less than they are earning now as minster....So, if they raise their wages does that mean that they will not be corrupt? Will not help their family members or friends get out of trouble? Will not give projects to them? Can you ensure that?
what do you think will happen if, say, Dr m/ sby becomes singapore minister???
Actually, in some countries such as US or even Thailand (look at Thaksin), they become rich first before they become politicians. So they wouldn't even need the high salaries in the first place. However, in Singapore it seems to be the other way round. Civil service and public office become the route to riches.Originally posted by unclebutcher:if you think about it...in terms of economics...
