avatar can not be animated .gif...i guess because the server make it into a picturebox...not like the signature which is bb coding...

or because the signature is not hosted by sgforums server...but the avatar is sgforums hosted...thats why they didn't allow animated avatars to take up much bandwidth...
bandwidth by the other photo hosting sites is their problem so to speak... -
